Light could not let this slide. He flung the blanket down off his face again and rolled onto his back, looking at L in disbelief. “That is so damn rich.”
“Excuse me?”
“Well, look at you!” Light exclaimed, gesturing with one hand. “You’re so on edge that you had to come in here to watch me sleep.”
L raised an eyebrow. “On edge?”
Light furrowed his brow and glared back at him. “Well, aren’t you? You were worried I might be- I don’t know, cooking up a plan or something- so you came in here to check on me.”
“That is an interesting interpretation.” L drew his thumb along his bottom lip and then bit down on it gently. “Sadly incorrect, yet still interesting.”
Light blinked, his attention caught. It had not occurred to him that L might have had any other reason for coming into the room. “All right then, so why come in here when you knew I was trying to sleep?”
L was looking at him strangely. It was hard to discern his expression through the ever-so-faint light landing on his face, but his gaze was somehow different from usual, a little less blank, a little less blindly wide-eyed.
It hit him then, a sledgehammer revelation that knocked his thoughts askew. Light gaped at the detective in utter shock. L just looked back at him, smiled a little, and licked the tip of his thumb very, very slowly.
“…I don’t believe it,” Light muttered.
“Is it so shocking?”
“Shocking?” Light sputtered. “Try inappropriate. Try selfish. Try ridiculous. Try… a whole lot of different things!”
“Ah,” L said mournfully, “Light is shocked.”
While Light was still trying to recover from his realisation, Ryuk began to drift across the room towards them, his attention piqued. “Hey, Light. What’s going on?”
“It is a shame,” L said regretfully, “since I was hoping we could help each other.”
Light narrowed his eyes. “You’re acting like we have some sort of arrangement going on here.”
L suddenly turned his head to look at him directly, his eyes wide. “Light has misled me.”
Light rolled his eyes. “Have I?”
“Yes. I was under the impression that Light has an interest in me.”
Light wanted to laugh, or perhaps to cry. “What the hell are you talking about?”
“Perhaps I am moving too quickly in this relationship, but you and I have after all shared intimacies. Correct?”
And Ryuk let out a long, loud laugh. “This guy’s hilarious.”
Light ground his teeth, unable to respond to the shinigami and with no appropriate response to the detective leaping to mind. Continuing to meet L’s stare was no longer possible, so he turned his face away, breaking eye contact, and instead glared at Ryuk, daring him to say any more.
As a result, he was entirely unprepared for L’s sudden weight on him, for the hands that scampered up his torso and the knees that straddled him. “Light is very cruel,” L murmured, his hands coming to rest on Light’s chest. The detective’s face, no longer illuminated by the television screen, was one dark shadow above him.
Light jumped violently. “What- hey! Get off me!”
L’s fingers plucked at his shirt. “I did not expect to be, but I am sad that I seem to have misinterpreted your actions. You ought to be a little more honest with your friends, Light.”
Light was not entirely sure how to respond to this accusation. At the time, the decision to step up their relationship had seemed the perfect way to disarm his opponent- unexpected, a challenge, and if it was accepted, a good way to move closer to him. He had not considered that L would not only reciprocate, but apparently interpret the gesture as a sign of Light’s interest in him, and later attempt to extend the activities between them- assuming that was indeed what he was doing. And oh God, L was undoing his shirt now, and his fingers were rubbing bare skin- yes, that was indeed what he was doing.
