A Sort of Power, part 2 anonymous June 6 2009, 01:40:47 UTC
As if on cue, L walked into the room. He stood in the doorway observing the scene- Light still in his shirt and pants, a blanket wrapped around his body and his limbs curled up slightly on the sofa, his eyes all of a sudden tightly closed and his breathing determinedly low and steady- and made a soft noise in the back of his throat, as if it was all far too goddamn interesting.

Light lay still, but his skin was already prickling.

“Light?”

Hell no. Light did not respond to the soft utterance of his name, not even deigning to stir slightly as if vaguely aware of a disturbance. He lay tightly coiled, refusing to acknowledge L’s presence, even while feigning sleep.

And then L sat on the sofa by his feet.

It took Light a lot of self-control not to leap up and punch him in the face. He was forced to shift his position, drawing his knees up closer to himself so that his feet were no longer in contact with the rough fabric of L’s jeans, and accompanied the movement with an irritable mutter. He wanted L to see that even if Light was asleep, his presence was still resented.

Light’s mood did not improve when a low chuckle began to make itself known in the room. “You really think this guy’s going to buy this, Light?” Ryuk said, making his amusement all too clear.

In response, Light merely tugged the blanket tighter around his neck and screwed his face deeper into a frown.

“Light,” L said, and there was no question in his voice this time. “I am sorry you cannot sleep, but it is not my fault.”

Light flung the blanket off himself and glared. “If you knew I was awake then what was the point in all of that?” he snapped.

L met his glare with a look of mild amusement. “I was interested to see how long you would continue the façade.”

“It wasn’t a façade!” Light said, and the anger in his voice was all too genuine. “As a matter of fact, lying still with your eyes closed is a good way to get to sleep, Ryuzaki.”

“But hearing my voice would already have interfered with that aim; at that stage there would be no reason not to reply.” L’s eyes appeared to glow in the soft light from the nearby television screen. “Or were you hoping that by fooling me into thinking you were asleep you would be able to observe me uninhibited- perhaps to learn something about me?”

“Even if I had some reason to want to do something like that,” Light snapped, deliberately meeting L’s gaze and not looking away, “I know you better than that.”

L looked intrigued. “Really? How so?”

“You’re never uninhibited. You don’t trust people enough for that. Not even if they’re asleep.”

L curled his toes where they stuck over the edge of the cushioned seat. “I suppose that may be true.”

“So now that we’ve cleared that up, will you leave me alone so I can sleep?” Light said, exaggerating his annoyance just to make a point.

L seemed to sigh a little, as though somehow disappointed in Light. “You were unable to sleep before I came in. What makes you think you will be any more successful now?”

“The passage of time,” Light said bluntly, and he pulled the blanket back over himself and flung himself back down onto the sofa like the conversation was well and truly closed.

Ryuk was laughing again, but Light did not care. The shinigami had witnessed every aspect of his life, after all- a little petulance was nothing to be concerned about.

“On the contrary,” L said, and Light growled a little, “it is obvious that you are now emotionally charged. Sleeping while in such a state is nigh impossible.”

“Emotionally charged?” Light echoed in disbelief.

“My presence has angered you.”

“Then go away!” Light yelled.

“Your anger will not leave along with me,” L said, matter-of-fact.

Light did not bother to reply; he was not sure that he would be able to say anything without ending it in a scream.

“If we are to continue with this arrangement,” L said, speaking to the lump of blanket with a tuft of auburn hair poking out from the top that at that moment made up Light Yagami, “it is imperative that you become accustomed to my presence. Therefore I shall remain until you are able to fall asleep.”

“That logic seems pretty flawed to me,” said the blanket.
