Beyond wants to wipe the face off of the boy on the floor. He knows how he would do it, a fantasy of thin-edged knives and scalpels and lovely red blood everywhere, but he's got bigger and better plans coming up. Plans that are yet half-formed, plans that he dreams of and wakes from, sticky and wet, eyes still full of strange straw dolls. He looks down at Near, noting the tint washing over pale features, and double-checks the numbers, assuring himself that it's not yet time. Just to be safe, he lets the boy go.
Near is strangely compliant, lying on his back beneath Beyond like a broken doll. His throat is ringed with red handprints, already bruising. If it weren't for his dark, sharp eyes, he would wonder if he hadn't killed the boy. He's so small, panting for breath, almost glowing against the dark wood floor.
At age nine, Near is the house's current wunderkind. He's only been here three years and he's already shot up past students twice his age. This isn't what infuriates Beyond about him, though--it's the smirk. The sweet drawl as he tortures Mello with second place. The way he always seems to know the best way to hurt, to dig his nails into his opponent and tear them to pieces. It would almost make him proud, except....
"Is Backup quite finished?" And damn, if he can't hear the sneer in that voice, even as Near's face is perfectly still. He backhands him for the cheek.
"I'm nobody's backup, Nate," he hisses at the boy through his teeth. A lovely pink bruise is forming across a white cheekbone, and he licks his lips at the sight of it. Near shrugs off the name as if it has no meaning to him. It probably doesn't.
"I have studying to get back to," Near states simply, and hidden in the words is the implication that Beyond had better get back to studying, too. He feels his face harden in a mask of rage.
"Shut up!" He's surprisingly light as Beyond shakes him, head thunking on the floor hollowly.
