Most interesting, though, was definitely L, who went by the name Ryuzaki while working on the case. The man sat weird, stating that he thought forty percent better sitting like that. He ate almost nothing but sweets, and he rarely-if ever-slept. This last, however, meant that Near spent a lot of hours alone with the man, while the rest of the crew was asleep.
Being a successor to L, Near took great note of things around him. Being someone completely new to the case, he also noticed things that the others may not have. Like the sneer of disgust on Light’s face whenever his girlfriend Misa visited. There and gone in an instant, but there none the less. Or the looks that L gave the pair of them. Yes, he noticed a lot…
--
Nearly a month of working on the case passed, and still no new leads were produced. L was beginning to regret having invited Near to work on the case. Sure, the boy was a genius, and doing this would help show if he was indeed prepared to become the new L, but… he was a damned distraction. L found his eyes moving away from the computer, and over the small, pale figure that sat next to him. He found himself noticing the way that Near played with his hair while thinking (much like the way he bit his nail), and the way the glow of the monitor made Near’s skin look even paler late at night when the rest of the lights in the room had been dimmed…
He shook his head slightly, pulling himself out of these wandering thoughts. Near had been here a month now, and hadn’t managed to produce anything new. L would assume that meant the boy wasn’t as smart as he first thought, except he too had been left clueless.
--
Things didn’t improve much as Near stayed on… and on. The two would sit next to each other for hours, silently working, only occasionally speaking to share a thought. L found himself increasingly distracted from the case, was half-tempted to send Near back, except he couldn’t think of a logical reason to. Or at least, not one that he wanted to explain to everyone else.
Another late night found the two sitting side-by-side, pouring through files they’d been through a thousand times before. The television was on, soft background noise reporting the weather. It seemed there was a storm moving in.
L stood, suddenly, looking down at Near. “We’ve been over these files thirty-eight times. The chance of finding something new tonight is a mere two percent. Perhaps we should get some sleep.”
Eyes that rivaled the darkness of his own looked up, and L noted the dark bruises forming under them. Near may have been a genius, but he was still only fifteen, his body needed more sleep than he was giving it.
“Fine…” The voice was soft, almost reluctant. Near stood, and the two left the main room, taking the elevator up to their respective levels.
Half an hour later, as L was exiting his shower, he heard a knocking on the main door to his apartment. He sighed, shaking his head a bit, walking over and leaning against the door. “Who is it?”
“It’s Near…” Barely audible through the door, but recognizable as the light-haired boy. L opened the door, blinking at his successor.
“Yes?”
“…” Mumbling, not loud enough to be understood. The detective motioned the boy inside, shutting the door behind him.
“What did you say?”
“It’s… thundering outside.” Voice still soft, but at least he could hear it this time.
“Yes. Yes it is.” Was it? He hadn’t heard any… Oh, there was thunder. Distant, but audible.
“I… Can I…” Near seemed to be having trouble articulating. L hid a smile, tilting his head as if confused.
“Can I stay with you?” This time the boy’s voice was loud enough to be heard, the words spoken in an embarrassed rush, pale cheeks tinting red.
