That's when L stepped into Light's view. He had a small smile on his face as he walked over to Light, shoulders slumped forward as they had ever been. He pressed a thumb gently to his lower lip and rolled his eyes toward the ceiling as he paused for a moment.

"I'm afraid that Mello has been unkind to you." L strode forward, and Near backed away to allow him to crouch in front of Light. He turned his face up to look into Light's eyes, rocking forward on the balls of his bare feet. "I am also afraid that you will find that none of us intend to extend any kindness toward you."

"You're dead," Light rasped. He felt his eyes beginning to water. L was dead. Wasn't he? He should've made sure. He should have stayed to make sure the corpse was a corpse. He should have removed its heart and mangled its brain. He should have put a camera in the coffin to make sure the body rotted into nothingness. He shouldn't have been so arrogant, he shouldn't have allowed himself to feel triumphant as he watched Matsuda weep openly over L's casket. He shouldn't have taken the years of silence as a sign that he'd beaten L.

"I am dead?" L chuckled. "Am I a ghost?" He ran two fingers down Light's cheek, receiving a startled flinch in response.

"I have been assisting the true L--" Near began quietly.

"We have been assisting L," Mello interrupted.

"For quite awhile. We were surprised to find that he had faked his own death, but I suspected that he might have gone to such lengths for the case," Near finished.

"We know about you," Mello said. "You kill for pleasure and hide behind what you thought was anonymity, don't you? You're a sick fuck..." Mello's voice trailed off as he paused to remove a lighter from his pocket, letting the silence weigh upon the room before finishing his thought. "So am I."

"L... Ryuzaki," Light said desperately, widening his eyes to achieve what he hoped was a convincing look of innocence. He met L's unwavering stare, mentally clinging to the chance that he might still be able to move the part of L that had once claimed to consider Light a friend. "I can't believe it's really you! You can't possibly know what losing my one real friend has done to me. Please, please, untie me so that we can speak calmly-- fuck!" Light felt a sobbing yell involuntarily arise from his throat. Mello held a flame to his earlobe, allowing the fire to lazily lick at the skin and hair that fell there. Light bit his lip, repulsed at his own weakness and the odor of burning hair and the beginnings of burning flesh adding a new element to the candied air.

"You were a very bad friend," L chided him, wagging a finger at him with one hand and popping a strawberry candy into his mouth with the other. It was then that Light realized that he couldn't see the source of the candy and pastry scent. They must be behind him. What else was in the room that he couldn't see? The room was dark, lit only by a dim yellow light from a lamp somewhere to his left. There were no decorations on the walls, no windows. His mind leapt back to Mello's earlier question: Where the fuck was he?

"Near," L said, his eyes not leaving Light's, "I think he requires water."

"Ryuzaki, what is this?"

"Please, Kira-kun, stop addressing me that way." L frowned slightly and averted his gaze for a moment. Light latched on to the change in expression and repeated the alias plaintively, leaning as close to L as possible while still bound to the chair.

He heard more than felt the back of L's hand strike his face, the sensation strangely detached from the sound and instead syncing up with Mello's laughter and the arrival of a strange sloshing noise.

"Mello, please," he heard Near say. Light watched Near hand Mello a large bucket that he seemed to have been struggling with. His clothes and forearms had been splashed with water. Mello appeared to be quite pleased with himself as he easily carried the container to L and set it before him.
