i finished nymphomation by jeff noon the other day. the first half is astounding, with gorgeous imagery and a rather interesting plot (if slightly imporbable). at about the halfway mark it looses all its direction and transcends to standard sci fi drudgery. it disgards its carefully woven suspension of disbelife and throws you headlong into something that is, for lack of descriptive words totally craptastic.
which is a pity, because the first half of the book does so well at creating a beliveable world.
im now starting utopia by thomas moore. with 1984 to follow after that.
