As little children, we are taught to dream big dreams, follow those dreams, and never settle for less. We're saturated with stories and fairy tales where good overcomes, patience is rewarded, and beautiful young people find and marry that one perfect match. We hear phrases such as "be patient, your time will come" and "good things come to those who wait". We spend our childhoods dreaming of what life will be like when we reach adulthood, of that dream mate, dream job, and dream life (house, white picket fence, a couple of kids, and a cat with a bell on her collar....). We dream of far-off countries and amazing adventures.
What if it was all a lie?
What if "going after our dreams" is just a way of distracting ourselves from the fact that life sucks and there is nothing we can do about it? What if the best we can ask for really is just to manage to make do with what we have?
Where was it ever written that every girl would marry a knight in shining armor or prince charming or even any guy? Why do people keep pushing "it will happen" when it could just as easily NOT ever happen?
And what if "waiting on God's timing" is just our way of making ourselves feel better about not being able to accomplish our dreams by putting the responsibility on the shoulders of some all-powerful being? What if it really isn't because "God hasn't brought the right one to us" but rather because we won't accept what we have and keep holding out for an ideal that can never be? What if it really is us?
What if good doesn't really triumph over evil? What if we wait and struggle and suffer and hope and at the end we just die?
What if there really is nothing more than just getting through today?
