Summary: Sometimes the worst things aren’t real.

Something was off, Draco was sure of it.

He heard music playing somewhere in his house, soft strains that had no tune. He was surprised, because the last time he checked he lived alone. It was an uneasy feeling that drove him to waking.

He got up, and stretched, heedless that he was clad only in lime green boxers.

Further investigation led him to the living room where Hermione Granger sat on his couch, holding an antique guitar.

“What’s going on?” he asked, the sight giving him pause. There was something very wrong here, although he couldn’t place his finger on it.

“What do you think, Draco?” She didn’t look up from the strings, brown curls falling over her face.

“I didn’t know you played,” he said, not sure why that seemed important.

“I don’t. This is for you.” She looked up and smiled at him, eyes shining.

Who buys a guitar for someone they hate apropos of nothing? He asked her as much, coming to stand before her.

She stood up, and began to dance around him, her hands fluttering along his shoulders and torso, making it difficult for him to concentrate. He reached out his arms to catch her and hold her still, but she slipped through them, giggling.

“Today’s a special day, isn’t it?”

“Is it? It must be for you to be here,” his voice was speculative, struggling through the heavy fog clogging his mind.

“Think really hard.” She was still laughing, and that was making him angry. The sound was too loud and it was mixing with the niggling feeling that something was wrong, producing a headache. “The spring was always my favorite time, but it’s summer now.”

She stopped her mad twirling, and took his fingers, pressing a loving kiss against his knuckles. When she pulled back his hand was bleeding.

“What in the name of Merlin is going on here?” he exclaimed, wishing the world would just hold still for one second, so he could focus. He cradled his injured hand, and wondered why it didn’t hurt.

“Only the actions that were made have consequences, Draco. You understand that, or you will.” She smiled at him again, and he was afraid. She reached up and looked into his eyes, and when she kissed him he tasted the past and ashes. When she pulled away she had blood on her lips. His blood.

She was still grinning.

He woke then, and the sweat made the thin sheets stick to his upright torso. There was no light in the room, but the darkness was not complete enough to prevent him from making out the silhouettes of the cell bars. His heart was racing and he had to force himself to breathe slowly, knowing that the Dementors would come if they sensed excitement.

What had that been?

He couldn’t remember, except that it had to do with Hermione Granger, and a guitar. A special day…

He knew, suddenly, and was discomfited by the fact that he wasn’t more disturbed. It had been a year and three months since his incarceration at the end of the war. It had been early in March when he’d been convicted of war crimes.

Today was his twenty fifth birthday.
