For a couple months now, we've been finding one of our burlap catnip mousies drowned in one of the cats' two water dishes. Each time, we fish out the poor thing, rinse it, let it dry, and return it to the toy box. Then two days later, there it is. It's always the same mousie and the same water dish ( Read more... )

It would make sense if it was his own bowl that he was dropping the mouse into, that is a way of claiming things. The cat knows the food or water bowl is it's own and so puts the toys it likes in it's only place it calls its own.

That could be - I think he drinks in that bowl more often, too. Though the toy is not as popular for him as the fishy on the string. :)

It sounds to me like he's *succeeding* in spiking the water! Catnip tea, anyone?

Hee hee, Catnip tea.
Next summer, we're hoping to till a new garden, and I've already said we've got to plant some fresh catnip. (I know Orlando looooves it.)

Any or all of those explanations sound good. Maybe it's a combination of the factors and if the result equals catnip tea that would only reinforce the behavior.
