There's a huge split going on with two of my favorite TV shows.

BSG is terrible, I can't even fathom why anyone can defend the very very bad storytelling going on right now. (there's only so much suspension of disbelief I can give when the guy in charge of the military in the last remnants of human civilization doesn't have anyone but his 2nd in command having his fucking back in his own command room on his own command ship). I hate hate hate hate the 1960's Batman style cliffhanger "omg will they die?" crap.

Lost is amazing. They've perfected the principles of addiction in human psychology regardless of if you're aware of it or not. The brain enjoys consistent rewards for participation. The more you watch Lost, the more you know about the story, but always in such a way that it's a breadcrumb towards another piece of knowledge about the story, leading to an ultimate goal. It's never a sweeping revelation that answers everything all at once, it's just a tidbit and it grabs the brain in a way that is literally addictive. Maybe the time travel is annoying to the people who didn't figure out it was a sci-fi show until the end of the 4th season... but it's VERY well done time travel. I'm sorry a sci-fi got into your hot people stuck on an island with a creepy cult show, but them's the breaks. Some people knew it all along. You actually watched and enjoyed 4 seasons of a Sci-Fi show, now can I interest you in some Fringe? Maybe some Terminator? What about some Dollhouse? (verdict is still out on that one, I have high hopes it'll be good and successful and escape Friday Night Purgatory unlike Firefly). It's not just for nerds!

I think there's something special about a show that manages to throw in Sci-Fi concepts into an otherwise fully mainstream show and hook millions of people above and beyond the 2-3 million that would otherwise watch a show with a heavy sci-fi slant.

But overall, I'm just really disappointed that either I didn't notice how bad some of the writing in BSG was, or that it's just become really bad all of a sudden. Either one is not so good. I'm still going to watch, but I have amazingly low expectations.
