Spring Is In the Air

It's that time of year again, when feline hormones are thick in the air and Tom gets the crap beat out of him. Since this is the second year this has happened, I've come to the conclusion that if he's going to come inside, it should be before anything more serious than a post-fight ear infection happens to him.

I don't mind at all. That's what the internet is for. :)

Thanks for the words about Captain, and I'm so sorry for your loss. I felt much the same way about my very first cat, Sylvester, and in fact I was a bit resistant to the idea of bringing another cat in because I missed him so much. It wasn't at all rational, because of course Greebo, who is several years younger, had been our second cat for years. It wasn't as though bringing in another cat would be changing much of anything. But it turned out that, in a funny way, I had to realize that I cared as much about Greebo as I had Sylvester before I could deal with moving on and getting Tom.

The FIV vaccine is, I've gathered, a very recent development. Many of the books I looked at for information didn't mention it even as a possibility unless they were published within the last four or five years. There aren't any meds as far as I know, but the vet seemed to feel that Tom, at this point, only had the virus and hadn't yet shown any signs of developing AIDS. So far, all he's shown is that he'd much rather be loved on than play hunting games. :)

Thanks again for commenting, and sharing your story about Captain. One silver lining I've taken away from this is that my next cat can be another FIV cat from a shelter, something that didn't occur to me until others started sharing their stories about their FIV cats and where they got them. So, I really do appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. Take care.
