Egg Nog recipe

Dec 06, 2009 16:54

hils, arianstarr and a anonymous person gave me a beautiful snowflake cookies earlier today, thanks to them for that.

Getting these, I remembered that I had posted an excellent recipe for egg nog earlier this year and decided to repost it since now is a better time.

It's a bit tricky and time consuming to make, but so good. I highly recommend it.

Even if you don't usually drink, or usually don't like egg nog if you do, then try this. It's a bit tricky trying to heat the egg yolks without actually cooking them, but it's worth it.

Actually, it's the Egg Nog recipe I'd envisioned Alfred making in my sole Clark/Bruce story, Mistletoe.

It goes down so smoothly, it doesn't seem like drinking at all. I know I love it and I usually loathe Egg Nog. It's because I'd never had *this* Egg Nog.

See the recipe below the cut, I hope someone on my flist will try it. If you do, let me know how it turned out.

Sorry, that the recipe is only in English (non-metric) measurements for my friends that aren't in the US. The original recipe had the metric conversions included, but I can't find the book... It's probably in a box somewhere.

EGG NOG OF THE COMMONWEALTH CLUB
Richmond, VA
The Alice B. Toklas Cookbook

INGREDIENTS:

Full

Half

Ingredients

24

12

eggs, the yolks separated from the whites, whites stiffly beaten

3 cups

1 ½ cups

sugar

2 quarts

1 quart

whiskey

2 quarts

1 quart

light cream

½ cup

¼ cup

rum

½ cup

¼ cup

brandy

1 quart

1 pint

heavy cream, whipped

4 cups = 1 quart = 2 pints

DIRECTIONS:

1. In a large bowl thoroughly beat the yolks of the eggs, then gradually beat in the sugar.
2. Pour the egg mixture into a saucepan; and stir and heat the mixture well, constantly stirring so the egg yolks don't actually cook but are still heated through completely. (If not heated thoroughly, the liquor will curdle the yolks in the next step.)
3. Stir in well the whiskey, rum and brandy.
4. Pour the mixture into a large punch bowl.
5. Add the light cream slowly and mix thoroughly.
6. Fold in the beaten egg whites, then the whipped cream.
