Your other lady friend is right on all counts! A) Be less hard on yourself B) Don't compare Last Time You Tried This with This Time. Body mechanisms slow down. And if you're just looking to lose weight, skip the muscle-building and do lots of cardio. But if you're doing rock-climbing classes, the muscle-building is probably even more important than the weight.

The nutritionist I used to see said the most important part of a healthy diet was switching from white carbs to whole wheat everything. Protein and fiber are essential, because they cut down the rate that sugars are absorbed into the blood. Without a ton of fiber, the body absorbs a ton of sugar at once, and then says, "WHOA TOO MUCH WHAT DO I DO?" And then uses what sugar it needs, and puts the rest in storage. So, when buying bread or pasta, don't buy white, buy wheat, and compare nutrition facts to see which are highest in fiber.

Skip the soda completely. Even diet soda. Drink lots of water. Eat breakfast first thing in the morning, even if it's just a piece of fruit and wheat toast. That will get your metabolism working at the very beginning of your day, and drinking water constantly will keep your digestive system working constantly too, which speeds up the metabolism.

Also, don't treat it as a flash diet to lose a ton of weight quickly. That's not healthy, and it's not a sustainable lifestyle. The best way to lose weight and then keep it off is to do it gradually, and make it an entire permanent lifestyle change.

(PS- I'm sorry I didn't get to see you when I was in Waltham- it was a really, really short visit, and I hardly got to see anyone. I'm online all the time though, so IM me, even if I'm away.)
