Structuring our first EP

Aug 22, 2009 23:23

This is a vera post, but lately I guess that's all I do, so whatever....

The tracks that will appear on our EP are as follows:

1. Buckley and Mordecai
2. Sandcastles
3. Kerouac
4. Tibet
5. ...Said Goodbye
6. Hazel Park, MI
7. Panic! On Capital Hill
8. Interlude

Obviously not in that order, but as far as order goes, so far i've heard these opinions sounded:

1. Buckley and Mordecai should go first on the album.
2. I would prefer that Hazel Park, MI goes last.

Other than that, I think we're pretty open.

I think panic should be lighthearted, because an all acoustic song without the cliche sad melodies needs to have something to it. I think we should have conversations in the background barely audible and laughter...almost like recording a candid clip of us talking and putting it in the track to where you can barely hear it.

I also think Panic should be recorded single take by placing a mic in front of Jeremy and giving a mic to me and Leslie. That way we can capture the atmosphere of those around us and it'll sound more on the spot...which would be a good sound for the song.

Interlude is an intimidating endeavor for me, but something I feel pretty confident about. I've been working out ideas on my computer, but i'd like to have a professional sounding orchestral attempt at playing off of the chord progression of Buckley and Mordecai. It'll have a name on the actual cd, something similar to B&M's lyrics....so probably something to do with airports or something.

I really would like during the chorus of one song to record a bicycle bell to pay homage to Brian Wilson. If any of you have real serious problems with it, we don't have to, but i'd really like to. It'd probably flow into it like a piece of percussion. I think it'd fit well in Panic on Capital Hill which is a fairly light hearted song anyways.

Possibly, we should have sandcastles lead straight into Hazel Park, MI. The reason behind this is while Sandcastles is a light hearted song, the bridge isn't, and it ends on an Em chord that is exactly where Hazel starts...just an idea. We can work with it.

When I got home today from practice I worked out a lot of harmonies for Leslie for Panic on Capital Hill that we can try to work on Wednesday. I want that song to just be a repetitive guitar chord progression that focuses on vocal work.

Transitioning? It's up to you guys, I was all for it...but now i'm having second thoughts. Hazel Park, MI ends on a C chord, so we could end it with the beginning of Buckley and Mordecai intro, which will make our record repeatable if they are the 1st and last song on the album.

Artwork/Name. I don't want to come up with a name until we decide where we're getting artwork, because I want the artwork to inspire the name or the name to inspire the artwork.

I realise this is probably tl:dr....but this is the product of us not talking about this stuff at all today. Post a comment if you have insight or outcries.
