Chapter 1

Most days I look forward to, mostly, maybe. Just not today, well, most other days don’t end up with me locked in a dark room along with a psychotic goblin-gnome-thing wielding a rather large axe- usually it’s something much more scary- but lets go back to my meeting with Millie- er- George, whoever.

I’ve heard of a lot of different supernatural creatures, and I’ve met a lot of other ones, most by very unfortunate trial and error, but I’ve never really heard of Grim Reapers. Not to say I don’t believe in the force of death and not that I haven’t heard of things of even stranger natures, but Grim Reapers? I think Bob and I are going to have a long talk when I get back home.

“So, what exactly happened?” I gave George a curious look from across the table. We had migrated to a small restaurant near by and were sitting outside. Needless to say I was lacking money, as usually, and was just drinking water- the tall scrawny one, Mason, had come along with us and was drinking a large coffee and trying to look inconspicuous .

“Well, I just happened to, you know, be walking by and I saw this thing grab her- Reggie. I went after it and it slammed me into a tree and ran off while I was disoriented.” She looked bothered and a bit guilty.

“A thing?” I queried.

“It was huge and really ugly. It looked kind of slimy too.. but didn’t feel that way when it hit me. Looked kind of stupid too.” She looked thoughtful for a moment, “I remember that it looked kind of green in the dark. Does that help at all?”

I thought about it for a moment, “The color really doesn’t tell me much, but this happened at night?” I gave her a pointed look.

“Yeah.” She looked curious.

“When it left... did it look like it just disappeared, or did it actually run off?”

“Um,” she said looking uncertain, “I’m pretty sure it ran off somewhere.”

I nodded, “Can you bring me anything that belonged to Reggie?”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So doing what I did best, I went to look for Reggie Lass. I drew a chalk circle placing a couple of Reggie’s items that George had given me into it while I ignored the curious stares Mason was giving me and the feigned bored looks George was fronting. Mason looked amused, almost like he expected me to pull a rabbit out of a hat.

I shook my head and focused my will into the circle and used a small pendant on a chain to direct me.

I felt the energy flow into the pendant and it lifted to point southward.

Mason blinked and mutter something thought sounded a lot like “Bloody hell.”

I walked over to the blue beetle and drove off in that direction.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So following the lead I ended up in an abandon warehouse, it was very dark and ominous, which was just so cliché. Of course that’s when big, bad, and ugly had decided to pop out and throw me a welcoming party. Now I was back to where I started, locked into a room with a goblin-gnome-thing.

It swung its axe at my head and I ducked when I heard the sound of it cutting through the air. I felt a breeze ruffle my hair and flinched away; my kingdom for a light.

I back towards a wall and felt my hip bump painfully against something that felt like a table. I stumbled and landed on my hands, my blasting rod slipping from my grip.

“Dammit Harry, pull it together.” I muttered to myself and then quickly regretted the slip when I heard the goblin thump its way towards me in the dark.

I quickly sent my hands skidding around the ground searching for my blasting rod, panic slowly rising. Finally finding it I grasped it tightly and rolled away as I heard the axe land where my torso had currently vacated and I planned on back pedaling into the wall, that is until a giant rough hand collided into me coming from somewhere in the dark. I slammed into the wall with a thud and felt myself go limp for a minute, my head ached and the world spun.

In my stunned pained daze I heard the loud thumping steps approach me, the back of my brain was screaming to move, but I didn’t feel like I could muster the energy at the moment. I was just a minute from being squashed and sliced to death when a voice called out.

“Hey ugly!” someone shouted, they sounded vaguely familiar.

The gigantic goblin turned around and it was about then I realized the lights were on and they were blindingly painful.

I squinted and realized the one who was yelling at big, bad, and ugly was George.

Crap.

It started towards her and she seemed to panic for a minute, she said “Oh Fuck.”

In the time it took for it to start towards her I forced myself to my feet, clumsily snatching my blasting rod and muttered a few words, my anger, fear, and pain going into them and I blasted the Goblin with a gout of flame.

It screamed as it was hit, the sound was horrible and shook the room, some of the blast caught on to one of the wooden tables and the room started to catch soon after.

I ran past the now curled up and screaming goblin and grabbed George’s hand, I knew Reggie was somewhere in the building and I was betting we didn’t have much time with one of the rooms on fire.

I lifted the pendant as it strained in my pocket and then found myself running into something. Stumbling, I quickly caught myself and then looked down.

A small girl with glasses askew was glaring up at me from the floor. The girl had dark blonde hair and an angry look on her face; “You can’t keep me here!” she yelled and went to run off.

George yelled after her “Reggie!”

The girl paused for a moment and turned to look at her.

“Who are you and how do you know my name?” the girl was trying to sound threatening and angry, but you could tell she was curious, “Wait a minute; you’re that girl who’s always wandering around my house!”

“Um..” George said rather lamely.

“Ladies, can we save this argument for later? The building is kind of on fire and I’m sure it’s not going to wait for us to sort this out...”

They both gave me a look.

“Just come on!”

So we looked for an exit- but nothing is ever that simple, not that starting a psychotic goblin-gnome-thing on fire is simple, but that’s beside the point. After finding our way out we ran into the bad guys, or a bunch of scruffy, white pale, dark clothed people who I assumed were the bad guys- I mean they couldn’t have been more obvious if they had made matching t-shirts that said “We’re Evil.”

“Give us the girl and we’ll let you go unharmed.” They said, almost in unison. That was creepy, and weird, but mostly creepy.

“That’s what they always say, so lets all save ourselves a lot of time and trouble and just let us go, because if you don’t I’m going to be forced to hurt you.” I was tired and frustrated, I wouldn’t put up with this crap.

They all took a step back, and it was about then the situation got ten times worse. Angry flaming goblin decided it wanted to join our little party. It burst through the wall of the building; I had enough time to shove George and Reggie out of the way as it slammed through the wall. Bits of scrap metal flew everywhere and fire started to spread on to the dry grass.

The momentum of the angry goblin sent it flying into to the group of evil looking people and they screamed as it crushed some of them and other caught fire as it ran by.

They ran around much like the goblin, which was starting to lose some of its vigor and finally passed out on the ground- it wasn’t screaming anymore.

The others scrambled together, well, the few that hadn’t been crushed to death or set on fire that is, and ripped a whole into NeverNever and escaped.

“Amatures.” I muttered. They wouldn’t be coming back any time soon.

I looked over at George, then turned my head over to Reggie and gave her a good once over, she didn’t seem like there was anything different about her- except...

I reached in to one of her pockets and pulled out a medium sized blue stone. My eyes widened.

“Jeeze kid, where the hell did you find this?” I looked at her.

“It’s mine, give it back!” she huffed at me.

“Hey, hey, hey! You shouldn’t be keeping something like this, no wonder you’re attracting creeps like that.” I said to her rather matter-of-factly.

“What, you mean creeps like you?” she was glaring at me.

“Ha ha ha, that’s right, make fun of the guy who just saved your life.” I rolled my eyes and got up to leave.

I heard another pair of footsteps join mine, which I assumed belonged to George, then a second pair joined ours.

“So, what is it?” Reggie asked.

“A very very bad stone that I need to get rid of.” Was the only thing I said.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, in the end I guess the whole trip wasn’t a bust, I made a few bucks, got accused of being a kidnapper and child molester by Reggie’s mom, and found the summoning stone of a very old, very scary demi god. Maybe this trip was more trouble then it was worth.
