WAL*MART

We watched "WAL*MART:The High Cost of Low Price" last night. I am appalled. I always knew WalMart was bad, but I didn't know *how* bad. And how *deliberately* bad. They pay their employees so little that they have to go on public assitance to live. Full time employees can't afford the insurance premiums. They are so committed to being anti-union, they constantly spy on the workers to make sure they're not organizing. They pull money from local government in the form of subsidies, promising to give back to the community, and then move just out of city limits and set up shop so the city doesn't even benefit from retail tax. These poor people in China work long hours for huge WalMart factories, and make $3 a day! They even make employees work off the clock, with the subtle suggestion that if they don't, they can be replaced.

It ended on an encouraging note, however, that some communities have organized and said "NO!" to WalMart coming in.

Emma Goldman, where are you when we need you????
