This past Thursday, the four of us went to our synagogue for a celebration. There were quite a number of local Jewish groups there from all over the area, and representing quite a bit of the spectrum of Jewish life. At anything like this there's food, and this gathering was no exception. I took my boys up to the dessert line, and we stood in line to get some cake.
Behind us was what seemed like a very pushy woman. Again, note that she was behind us; she had her arm shoved out at full extension, holding a plate, in such a way that it was actually physically ahead of me. I made a point of bending down to talk to my boys, and spoke in a voice loud enough for her to hear. When I came back up again, I bumped (gently) into her arm, which was retracting the now-full plate. I said "Excuse me" in a rather loud and indignant way; she replied "hey, you bent down to talk, I made eye contact" in a "you-snooze-you-lose" tone of voice.
"Yes," I responded, "I was telling my children about the importance of waiting your turn!"
This is why they don't let me out in crowds - the urge to find a stick and beat people with it is far too great.
