Lisette woke up as the car started to slow, then stop. Sitting up, she looked around trying to get her bearings. For only a second she wondered what she was doing in a car. The though passed as she looked to Allen. His eyes concentrating on the road and traffic. He’d just gotten off the highway and now they were whirling through the city traffic.
Wiping the sleep from her own eyes, she looked at the buildings that flicked past. This was definitely a change from her suburban life. It was as if while she was sleeping she was thrown into the real world. Living in a city for the first time in her life, she felt small and overwhelmed. Allen squeezed her knew gently as he stopped at a traffic light.
After weaving his way through the crisscrossed streets, Allen parked in a lot adjacent to a tall apartment building. Getting out, he took the two heaviest of Lisette’s bags and motioned for her to follow him. She took the last bag and trudged behind him, feeling the slightest bit of apprehension as they walked into the apartment complex. Allen stopped and set down the luggage as he pressed the button to call an elevator.
Lisette stood mutely beside him taking in the bare, yet elegant decor of the minimally furnished lobby. As the elevator closed with them safely tucked inside, Allen wrapped an arm around Lisette’s waist in a familiar loving gesture. She smiled slightly, leaning into the warmth of his body. A small yawn escaped her lips just as they reached the third floor. He led her down a wide hallway to the very last door on the left.
Unlocking and opening it so that Lisette could enter, Allen smiled and whispered, “Welcome home.”
