Blurb - Patches Watching an argument

Oct 18, 2006 17:08

I sat, my tail curled around me as I watched them. Evan and Sophie were talking. I couldn't understand their words; that language is something beyond the body language I use. It was all verbal and loud. How could humans stand to be so loud? I knew they were arguing by the way Sophie was acting. Her arms were wrapped around her and she was leaning away from him. Evan kept getting closer, though. Obviously he couldn't read her body language. I could. She was scared and being backed into a corner.
She shouted something at him and turned away, her face flushed as she looked for something. Spotting me, she plucked me up and held me in a death grip to her chest. I mewed in protest. I like petting as much as the next cat, but this was a bit much. She coddled me and rubbed behind my ears. I calmed down for a moment. Not for myself but because she needed me to. I hung limply in her arms and glared at Evan.
I hissed as he reached to pet me. If he was going to make Sophie angry I wasn't going to humor him. It was all his fault that we were here. He took me and Sophie to this place and made me grow up all at once. There wasn't even any decent food for me, just whatever Sophie snuck from the kitchen. I got fish sometimes but mostly it was bread or cheese.
I don't like cheese.
Sophie put me down and started poking Evan in the chest, screaming in a shrill voice. I tried to tune it out and groom. She'd messed up all the fun on my sides and back when she'd picked me up.
Keeping an eye on the arguing humans, I slowly began grooming my paw pads so I could clean my ears. This was going to be a long one; I could tell by the way Evan was moving. He was stiff and his arms were at his sides, hands balled into fists unless he gestured. Poor humans need better communication skills.
