This image represents my first journalism project. You could say that this is when I got the ‘journalism bug’; what better way to be initiated than during a dangerous police standoff.

I was listening to my police scanner when I heard the call go out for Westshore SWAT, that a man had holed himself up with gas tanks. Apparently he had an altercation with his family - they wanted to take him to Lakewood Hospital for a psychological evaluation.

I quickly threw on my clothes, grabbed my camera bag and rushed down to the scene. Lakewood Observer publisher Jim O’Bryan was already there, so I caught up with him and got more information on the situation.

An hour later, I had several photos in the can and rushed back home to write a story before going to press on Tuesday.

The finished product is online at The Lakewood Observer.
