Yesterday I was up in the attic twice. The first time was to disconnect some hokey wires that were installed on the north wall of the office, and to put the HVAC foil tape on the plenum joints. It took about an hour. I was in the attic at 105 degrees F (about 40C) and by the time I came down I was absolutely drenched in sweat. I also scraped my forearm, so hopefully that doesn't get infected from all the grime and rat droppings left in the attic. I washed it up well when i took a shower afterwards.
Then, after several hours of recovering. I had to go BACK up in the attic to reconnect wires because the wires I cut were feeding the lighting in the front of the house. So I put up a junction box, and made a proper connection. I hate old electrical, they made a bunch of crappy connections up there by just twisting wires together and taping them. Really a half assed job. Good old 1940's construction. But actually it's lighting that must have been installed in the 1980's. Bastards.
So the progress is:
- Subpanel installed and wired up, ready to be connected at the main box
- Outlet box installed in closet for server and networking equipment
- Wires pulled to south of office, and to the library crawlspace.
- Got the fittings for connecting up the wiremold outlet strips
Still remaining to do:
- Actually wire up outlet strips.
- Put junctions under the library crawlspace, and run wires to where the library outlets will go
- Drill up through the floor, and break open areas around outlet boxes to pull wire from below
- Wire up outlets and cut off old wiring to boxes, and remove if possible
- Patch plaster, and call for inspection
If you're planning to rewire outlets in your house, i recommend avoiding the outlet strips and just going with regular trade style outlet boxes. Wiremold is just too hard to figure out how to connect everything up. They have a catalog about 6 inches thick.
