Kylea's birthday and other traumas

Kylea's birthday was great fun. She's an adorable happy near-toddler, and watching her dig into her birthday cake, (pictures to come), was enough to induce a diabetic coma in me, and I wasn't the one inhaling the sugary goodness*. She's such a sweet kid. She smiled and cooed throughout all the chaos. Eventually she succumbed to a short nap, waking up an hour later, happy as ever, and ready to dig into her dinner.

In other news, my mother is scheduled for a hip replacement on October 1st. I have some seriously mixed feelings about this. I know many people who've had the surgery and, after a recovery period, found their quality of life greatly improved, which is what I want for my mother. (I also know one, relatively young, person whose had serious complications from the surgery and spent the last couple years in pain, punctuated by further surgeries. But I realize that he's the exception.) No, complications like that are not my concern. My concern is that my 82 year old mother is undergoing a fairly significant surgery under general anaesthetic and I'm, quite frankly, damn fucking scared for her. So anybody out there with good happy hip replacement surgery stories, or any surgery stories involving seniors, send them my way, please. No kidding, I'm really worried.

*Seriously, they stripped her down to her diaper, put a tarp underneath her, and gave her an entire birthday cake. It was adorable.
