The Many Faces of Oliver Queen/The Green Arrow--Across the Universes.

Oct 23, 2009 17:19

I mostly play Ollie based on how I perceive him from Smallville. Lately, however, I've also been reading some of the Green Arrow comic books and graphic novels, so the more I do that, the more I find myself adding in bits of his personality from there, as well.

His personality in this journal varies amongst the universes he's placed in, which I will explain, as it's the purpose of this whole entry.

The verse first I'm going to address, not surprisingly to those who read this, is Metropolis verse.

This is a universe that had already been established for chloeas that she invited me to join shortly after I decided to RP with Oliver. It's set post-Beast (season 8 episode) when Oliver shows up. He learns that Davis Bloome and Chloe had been dating before she was forced to kill him to protect Clark.

This gives him a new perspective of Chloe, as well awakening a protective side of his toward her that hadn't really been dealt with a lot on the show (minus a few instances in season 8). I view Oliver as being the leader, the protector that we saw in the season 6 episode "Justice."

It didn't take long before Oliver really began to "talk" to me. Metropolis Oliver quickly discovered that he and Chloe had a lot in common, and that he truly enjoyed her companionship. I also began to learn that he's a lonely guy. Yeah, he's a rich playboy billionaire, but when it comes down to it, most of his relationships are based on world-saving or business because of Queen Industries. Chloe, while a member of the League, also spent time with him just hanging out and being normal. Well, as normal as they could ever be. Oliver had never really had a chance of normality between his social status and being Green Arrow.

Oliver also has a lot of insecurities that are brought to light--particularly his jealousy over Clark's abilities. But not just Clark--all of his friends--A.C., Bart, Victor, Dinah--they all have abilities that in his mind, put them ahead of the game. It makes him push himself harder to be better because he is just a human and he feels the need to prove himself. It really hit home in his mind how much less he is when Chloe was kidnapped by the gang and he couldn't do anything to stop it from happening. It played on his worst fears.

He's extremely, extremely dedicated to Chloe--even more so after they begin dating. He loves her like he's never loved anyone. He's also happier with her than he's ever been.

This version of Oliver, unless otherwise specified on the post, is the one who is most chatty--here and in other communities, such as sixwordstories and nuffsaid. He's extremely outgoing, likes to talk to anyone and everyone, and wants to save and help everyone that he can. He's made a great deal of friends just by striking up random conversations.

Lost! Verse.

The concept of Lost! verse was to explore what could have happened after season 6's "Progeny" aired. We know that Chloe's mother Moira, is at a facility in Star City, taken care of by Oliver's "people." But beyond that, we never really heard anything else. Did Chloe ever go visit her mother? Did Oliver ever get the full story on what had happened? Did he ever find out that Chloe was meteor-infected? What would that have been like and how would that have altered the course of their friendship/relationship?

Coming at it from that angle, Chloe and Oliver really didn't know each other very well at the time. But Oliver being Oliver, wants to help everyone, especially the people he's friends with (even if they're not close friendships). So he deliberately insinuates himself into her life, especially once he finds out that she's meteor-infected and Lex had her in a testing facility. His hatred for Lex grows ten-fold from then on. Granted, Oliver hates Lex in Metropolis verse, too, but I think it's more intense here. He's more driven by his anger at Lex in Lost! verse.

This Oliver is also more flirtacious and playful than the others, because season six, overall, was lighter in content than season 8, so he and Chloe both have a sort of innocence still left about them. He's definitely attracted to and intrigued by Chloe and even though he feels guilty about thinking of her that way, once he finds out how she'd felt about Clark and how insecure she is when it comes to the opposite sex, he finds himself wanting to show her that she has no reason to be insecure.

Savior verse.

This verse hurts to write sometimes. Oliver and Chloe are both so broken and lost here at points it has felt like things would not get any better for them. Set post-"Doomsday" (season 8 finale), Chloe has been on her own for six months since Clark walked out and the JLA disbanded and split up. She's been patrolling the streets of Metropolis herself, and sending tips to the police via her codename Watchtower. She comes across Oliver one night in an underground fight club, and pretty much saves his life--physically and mentally.

Oliver was carrying a huge deal of guilt from Jimmy's death, of not being able to do more to stop everything from spiraling out of control, and also from killing Lex (which will be explored more in coming threads), that he was actively, albeit subconsciously, seeking to get himself killed as penance.

As the verse goes along, Oliver becomes very attached to Chloe. He needs her in a way he's never needed anyone before. Almost like a lifeline. This Oliver is darker, more desperate than the others (except maybe current canon-Oliver), and even a bit clingy. And this Oliver can't stand Clark. The thought of Clark coming back into their lives upsets him a great deal, because it all goes back to his fear of losing Chloe. He fears that if Clark returns and apologizes to Chloe, he'll be tossed to the side so they can go back to the way they were before and that he will be alone. He's very protective of Chloe--more so than both Metropolis and Lost!verse Ollie.

Basically what it boils down to in this universe is that it's the two of them against the world. Metropolis has gotten better (not only because of their work but because Clark is back doing the hero thing, too), but their minds are trapped in this sort of post-apocalyptic state where it seems like it's as bad as it is in Gotham. Oliver's very much anti-social in this universe. The only one he seems to want to be around or with is Chloe. He trusts no one else, literally.

Canon and Canon (sort of).

Currently season 9 Smallville is airing. Canon Oliver has talked to me some, but not nearly as much as the others. This Oliver is pretty much what we see on the show. Utterly lost, refusing help, self-destructive and crazed.

* * *

What I mean by Canon (sort of) is that an RP or a thread might be based on something that happened in season 9, but that it is only canon to that episode, and not to any other future RPs and threads (unless they just happen to fit in together). Also, this Ollie tends to be not as dark as absolute canon Oliver. Because in my mind, based off RPing with him for the past four or so months, he's just kind of lost and looking for answers rather than actively engaging in outright self-destruction. He does make a few posts here and there in sixwordstories in this quest for answers.

Please feel free to ask questions in response to this post, or make your own comments or whatnot. I'm always, always up for a good conversation regarding Oliver/Green Arrow. :D
