Oliver rubbed a hand over his face as he knocked softly on Mia's door that morning. Chloe had left him a note telling him that she and Mike were taking a trip to the Daily Planet to see Lois, and that Mia was still sleeping. Always a light sleeper, Mia was awake at the sound of footsteps but with Fletch cuddled in bed with her she wasn't scared of them. Especially when Fletch barked and she knew it was just Mr. Oliver. Fletch liked Mr. Oliver. Mia liked him too. He was nice and he didn't yell or hit.

Sitting up in her bed, Mia let Fletch drop off the side and run to the door. "I'm up!" she crowed, then added, unnecessarily, "So's Fletch."

He grinned at her announcement and opened the door. "Good morning. Hungry?" he asked, kneeling down to pet Fletch when the pup bounded over to him excitedly.

She nodded and crawled over to the edge of the bed so she could get down and pet Fletch too. "Can we have pancakes?"

"You bet," he agreed without hesitation, smiling at her. "With choclate chips?"

"Yeah!" She clapped her hands happily and Fletch barked again, catching her excitement. Giggling, she wagged a finger at the puppy. "You can't have one, Fletch. Chocolate gives you tummy aches."

Oliver petted Fletch's head gently. "No, but we can give him a dog treat instead." He rose to his feet and held his hand out to Mia. "Bacon or sausage with the pancakes today?"

She put her hand in Oliver's and let him help her up. The over-sized t-shirt she was wearing as a nightgown brushed her toes as she stood. "Bacon," she decided. Fletch liked bacon the best. "And milk and syrup." That was something she really liked about staying with Mr. Oliver and Miss Chloe. They always had a lot of really good food.

He grinned, knowing full well she'd be sharing that bacon with the pup. "Bacon sounds good to me," he told her, leading her out of her room and down the hall and down the steps to the kitchen. "So I was thinking...you want to go to the zoo after breakfast?"

Her ears perked up at that. "Where the animals are?" She'd never been to the zoo before, but she'd heard about it.

His chest tightened a little as he realized that she'd never been to one. "Yep, that's the place. All kinds of animals. Monkeys and elephants and tigers and bears."

"But they won't eat you, right?" She didn't exactly know about tigers and elephants, but bears ate people, she was pretty sure of it.

Oliver smiled at her. "Don't worry, they're behind bars. You'll be perfectly safe. Promise," he told her, making his way over to the refrigerator and opening the door.

"Okay!" She climbs up onto one of the kitchen stools and perches there to wait for pancakes. Something occurs to her as she looks around. "Where's Michael? And Miss Chloe? Aren't they coming too?"
