"Unicorn fear?" he teased, nudging her lightly with his elbow before sliding down off the counter and moving to the stove, stirring the pot of chili.

"I grew out of the liking horses stage a long time ago," she replied, leaning forward to sniff the air. Already she could tell that the chili had lots of pepper in it.

"Well, what about hearts and flowers?" He grinned, glancing at her over his shoulder. "All pink of course."

"Do it and die," she scowled, getting up to poke him in the ribs with a finger.

He laughed. "Fine, fine. No hearts and flowers. Red and yellow blankets and pillows for Mia."

She smiled in satisfaction, then stole the spoon from him for a taste.

She made a dramatic grimace and dropped the spoon back into the pot. "I think I'm going to keel over and die."

He frowned at that, his eyebrows furrowing. "Really? That bad?" He dipped a spoon into the pot and took a bite, as well. It tasted fine to him.

He paused at that, considering. Then he shrugged and pulled a couple more of tomatoes out of the fridge. He set them on the counter, arching an eyebrow at her and sliding a knife over to her.

She took the knife and started slicing the tomatoes up without thinking about it. It just seemed like the normal thing to do.

He smiled at her, watching her for a moment and then opening the fridge again. "I don't cook here very often. Well, I haven't yet anyway. We haven't been open very long." He pulled out a gallon of milk and poured two glasses. "Any ideas on what they might like for dinners?"

She shrugged and scooped a pile of chopped tomatoes into the pot. "I always just eat whatever's around. Meal planning isn't my thing. That and I haven't actually had a real, sit-down dinner since I was twelve."
