Need some advice here people...

So I'm looking for a second job to subsidize the barely-above-minimum-wage job I have at the moment. I have 2 possibilities: Target and Canyon Lakes Residential Treatment facility. I have no idea which one to take. Here are the arguments for both ( Read more... )

And I mean full-time/part-time jobs, not any other types of jobs (you think I don't know what kinds of minds we're dealing with here? :-P).

Anyways...my advice is this: go for the Target job for now. It pays more, has less potential hours, and you won't feel bad about leaving it (ie less of a commitment). I think given your situation right now- new to the area, new to grad school- that may work out for you better until you can get your schedule down and what not. I'm all for working with the kids (it'll look great on resumes for you, it can be fulfilling, it's within your interests, and goooooo social sciences!), but maybe it wouldn't be the best thing to jump right into. You could always go to that if Target doesn't work or whatever.

Not that I'm saying retail is spectacular, but I know you could handle it (esp if it's not around the holiday season- then it's a completely different issue!). Are any bookstores or movie rental stores (ala Blockbuster) hiring? That'd seem pretty stress-free and quiet.

I think you should definitely give a serious listen to Jen's advice. She made a lot of good points.

I mean, I can totally see you in job number two at Canyon Lakes, but the thing you really have to ask yourself, is if right now, at this very moment, that is the kind of commitment you want to get yourself into. You just moved and you're starting school soon.... it just seems like a lot to take on. But hey, you're the only one who can know for sure. So you just have to look deep down into your heart and ask yourself what's right for you and of course also Josh right now.

And btw, I love Target! Hee hee... I buy tons of clothes and bags and gifts and all sorts of stuff from there... I dunno... maybe it isn't your style, but I am sure you can find somethign to use an employee discount on.
