I haven't enjoyed a Korean drama since My Girlfriend is a Gumiho. (Mostly been sticking to British stuff recently.) I'll read the summaries on
dramabeans but I'll seldom actually follow it up and watch it. The last drama I tried to watch was City Hunter with Lee Min-ho, but it was slower and less awesome than the actual recap. Also, my favorite character gets killed. I knew I couldn't watch it anymore, knowing that was coming for me. :(
So here comes Flower Boy Ramyun/Ramen Shop the first in a series of dramas that center around pretty boys (not handsome boys, pretty boys). That's not always enough, you know: the Korean version of Hana Yori Dango was terrible no matter how much Lee Min-ho killed his role in it. And FBRS only has four episodes under its belt-- it could still suck.
But so far it's been obsession-inducing wonderfulness. Yes, Jung Il-woo is pretty (his hair is magnificent and so is his smile) and so is Lee Ki-woo (who is 6'2" to Jung's 6'0"... how do these Koreans get so tall?) And there is yet another army of pretty boys behind them. But the story is hilarious and hearty. Lee Chung-ah, the lead actress has a marvelous face for expressions. She's almost cartoonish in how she can contort it to show wistfulness, happiness, and sometimes boiling anger. I love her character Yang Eun-bi: an indelicate, sporty girl trying on a veneer of politeness to succeed at getting a job as a teacher.
Jung Il-woo plays the chaebol (what else?) Cha Chi-soo at the high school she teaches at. He's smooth, but a spoiled brat. It's really annoying, but I'm savoring it for the comeuppance that will surely arrive. As of episode 4, Eun-bi is already refusing to take crap from him. Eun-bi hasn't met Lee Ki-woo's character properly yet: he's hovering around the edges, falling asleep at the best of times, calling her "his wife" and declaring her temper (which everyone else hates) "sexy." I'm already torn Yang Eun-bi, if I were you, I would take Lee Ki-woo's character who I think is named Kim EDIT: IT'S CHOI Kang-hyuk, but I'm not sure. Either that, or you take Cha Chi-soo so I can have Lee Ki-woo. *coughs*
Oh, and somehow they all end up running and working at a ramyun/ramen shop.
This show is killing it. I can't wait for episode 5.
