For some reason, I haven't talked that much about Community, even though it's my favorite show on television right now-- I've even got Britta Perry repping as my default icon. (She's like me in a lot of ways. Yeah: crikey.) I should probably write a couple of posts about it; it's just that this post is not that post.
This post is about how ridiculously pleased I was to see TROY "BUTT SOUP" BARNES win
f_march_madness and about the incredible campaigning going on in the comments. I wasted hours reading that stuff. At first, I was just feasting on the Troy love, but I found myself reading up on the other characters too. So I have to watch Veronica Mars sometime soon. And just wrapped up the first series of Doctor Who with the Eleventh Doctor in it. (
f_march_madness: it works!)
I have been trying to get into Doctor Who for awhile now, actually. Way back when I first got into Being Human, I think, and I saw that the BBC had a few episodes On Demand. I tried watching the first episode of the revamped Who (which begins with the Ninth Doctor) and found myself bored with the Doctor and Rose getting chased by animated mannequins. It looked really low tech and pathetic. After Sherlock left me with crazy cravings, I tried to get back into Who with the second episode. I was completely annoyed by the last living human being as a stretched out piece of skin, a little bit insulted that a humanoid plant was played by a black woman (while other more recognizably human characters were all played by white actors; I'm pretty sure she went ahead and died too), and did not really buy Rose somehow surviving getting incinerated by the sun basically unscathed (while some other cannon fodder did not).
But I ramble. With all the
f_march_madness Eleventh Doctor love, I skipped ahead to his series (the 5th). (I'll probably jump back and watch Ten while waiting for series 6 in late April.) It's a ton better. Some of the episodes were rocky, but I did eventually come to believe that the Doctor and friends could be in trouble. And Weeping Angels are the creepiest baddies ever.
The Eleventh Doctor is pretty marvelous. (Not that I know much about the other Doctors to compare him there.) He's an eccentric old man (in a young man's body) who adores children and goes on all sorts of adventures. He solves problems with nothing but his wits and his sonic screwdriver, blah blah... To be honest, he reminded me a lot of Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock from Sherlock and I have to wonder how much of that is Steven Moffat the executive producer's fault.
Which is all to say that as marvelous as the Doctor is, he feels old hat. The eccentric old stranger feels stock and like I've seen him before. Yeah, in Sherlock.
Ultimately, it was Amy Pond, the Doctor's companion, who got me to invest in Doctor Who. I seriously love her to pieces. I love that she was a sensible child, and wasn't alarmed by the crazy guy eating fish sticks and custard in her house. I love that she doesn't listen to what people say and invites trouble. I love that she wears crazy fingernail polish (so do I, when I'm able to!) and mini-skirts. (I know they're doing it to sex up the character which is unfortunate, but she simultaneously wears stockings as if they remembered they were on the BBC, were family friendly and not quite that racy. It's just not to the level of American television, which is funny because I know Britain also has lax-er standards for boobs and such.)
And I love that Amy and the Doctor have ridiculous chemistry with each other. I just love watching them hang out. They are beyond adorable. It is a minor shame that it's not the ship they have decided to go with.
But I also don't blame her for picking Rory. I would've picked him too. I like how steady he is. I don't think there's enough Rory in the story for me to have a solid opinion (so far, he's mostly been the guy who's in love with Amy), but I'm excited to see where it goes.
