The art on the hardcover of Westerfield's book was gorgeous.

I think tweens are more likely to buy a book with a handsome or pretty person's face on it. Marketing?

It is marketing, and currently the fashion is to put people's faces on them. It goes in and out of vogue. Personal opinion, I don't like it and can't wait for it to go out of season, but the wait is longer than I'd hoped...
