So here's my rather eclectic collection of recs in the following fandoms: A Dog's Breakfast, Jesus Christ Superstar, Donald Strachey Mysteries, Big Eden, RPF-SG-1 and SGA, Georgette Heyer - These Old Shades & Devil's Cub, Brokeback Mountain, The Princess Bride.
A Dog's Breakfast
Trees are Tricky ThingsOkay, first of all, this was my request and I love it because of that. But also, this story has done what is hard to do (and I know because I've tried) - it captures the quirkiness of the movie and Hewlett's characterization of Patrick so that I could easily believe it's part of the movie. And it's got a possible happy ending! And I grinned like crazy when I realized who the romantic interest was!
Jesus Christ Superstar
Love You TomorrowThis was my second story-gift, but I also rec it because it is wonderfully written, very evocative of the 2000 movie version, and so poignant that I had tears in my eyes while reading.
Look What You've Brought Us To is also a terrific story, with Judas looking in at Jesus and Mary.
Donald Strachey Mysteries
I love these movies, and there are a
lot of great stories in this fandom this year, which is fantastic (and if you haven't seen these movies, rent them - they are a sort of gay "Thin Man", with a very sweet relationship between the leads)
Fancy Pants - How Donald and Timmy got their dog, and the initial picture of Donald being handed a tutu-clad dog makes me laugh every time.
A Christmas Yarn - A great look at Christmas with the boys, at Timmy's mom, and a possible reconciliation with Timmy's dad. (And I love that the estrangement isn't because Timmy's gay, but because he went to work for the other political party.)
Big Eden
There are a number of Big Eden stories this year, and ironically enough, all of them refer to stars in the titles. All of them are good and you should
read each of them, but I want to recommend in particular
Pleiades - a lovely look at Pike and the men who hang out at the General Store and are so protective and caring of him.
RPF-SG-1 and SGA
Normally, I don't read RPF because I'm not interested in the actors, but these two are my guilty pleasures. And there were two really great stories here.
Rhythm and Blues-angsty and yet sweet, dealing with the time before, during, and after Michael's hiatus from the show.
I Reach Out (trusting you there) - Great bantering between David and Joe, great set-up, and hot hot hot sex.
Georgette Heyer - These Old Shades and Devil's Cub
Oddly enough, both of my favorite stories in these fandoms are about the same thing - the births of Justin and Vidal's first sons (one being Vidal, of course). The stories are
Christmas Red and
The Cub's First Cub respectively, and the frantic worry of the men, the complacence of their wives, and the sweetness of situation makes me go "awwwww!"
Brokeback Mountain
A Man's God-Given Right-I love this alternate to the movie's ending, pure and simple. The love between Jack and Ennis is palpable, and the writing style evokes both the book and the movie for me.
The Princess Bride
There Will Be No Survivors... - yes, this is being recced all over the place, but it so deserves it. This is a wonderful story, a great explanation to how Wesley could be the Dread Pirate Roberts who leaves no survivors, and Inigo is just so...Inigo. I loved it to pieces.
I've still got the entire list of Peter Wimsey, Sherlock Holmes, the rest of Georgette Heyer, Cadfael (both movie and books), Quantum Leap, MacGyver, National Treasure, and Wilby Wonderful to get through, but I don't know if I'll get that done before the reveal.
