I am more prone to laryngitis than anyone else you'll ever meet. I lose my voice at the drop of a pin, every single cold, a good snout full of pollen, lack of sleep, being looked at funny... according to my mother, my first bout came shortly after I was born. My record is three weeks with no voice, that happened in my late teens after a bad combination of a virus that seemed to have a particular affinity for the vocal cords (I wasn't the only one rasping and whispering) and a favor done for a musician friend who wanted some background vocals that were damn near whistle register. (Whistle register is the term for those insanely high notes that are beyond soprano, even beyond falsetto. Ever heard that 70s song Lovin' You? That's whistle register. It's rough on the throat. I used to be able to do it, but not anymore.) I am on track to beat that record now, I have been squeaking and rasping for over a week now.
I still have my tonsils. Whenever I've had my throat looked at for various throat-y ailments, they've never seemed particularly inflamed. I'm treating this bout the same way I always do, copious amounts of hot tea and cough drops.
