First Drive, and my Nerves hated it

May 10, 2007 18:41

Finally got out on the actual road today for the first time. Just for 10 mins around a few blocks, but it's a start to learning.

First Complaint: Gotta say that the feel of acceleration and deceleration can take you by surprise. The overall feeling of not being in control of the vehicle was very disconcerting, and even now in my computer chair i'm ready to jump out of my skin. Experience changes this i'm sure. Well, at least for my sake, it better. Simply can't be that nervous behind the wheel and learn anything, to say nothing of getting a full license.

Second Complaint:  My right ankle. I'm fairly short for a guy, so there isn't a position for my seat that puts me at a "comfortable" distance from each petal. Either the Brake is too close and the Gas is ok, or the Brake is ok but the Gas is too far. So i'm in a constant state of discomfort over that. Again though, it may be that my ankle needs to get used to the constant "pushing" of one petal or another. Like building up the strength of a muscle that is seldom used.

Last complaint: My back. For learning and for taking the drivers test, your seat must be fully upright while driving. Again, it forces me to sit so straight (my posture, historically, SUCKS) that my shoulder blades feel like a small knife is between them after about 5 mins of driving. Again, stress keeping my muscles unnaturally tightened and my overall lack of physical fitness makes this more uncomfortable than it needs to be.

Still stressed so I can't think of any other noteworthy comments. I'm sure it's fun in the long run, aside from being required for normal living. But for now it's a stressful experience and i've got to swallow my nervousness and get on with it. No real fix for this, sadly.
