Over the last few months I've fallen in love with roller derby and have been going out to as many bouts as I can to learn the sport. Next opportunity I have to try out I'm going to give it a whirl ( Read more... )

bah, size isn't important in derby. (for evidence of this, look at the gore gore rollergirls, the strongest team on the league)
glad you're excited to get involved.
I love love love derby.

Right now I love watching it, and I highly suspect I'll love playing it. My favourite player to watch is Hellionboi from the Take Outs (Ohio Roller Girls), she's jammer who isn't much bigger than I am and she really racks the points up. She's actually why I decided I could play after my girlfriend told me I'd probably be good at it. I guess time will tell if I'll be any good at it but I'm willing to give it a whirl.
The best game I saw in Toronto so far was your bout against the Gore Gores. As good as they are they have the most hideous outfits I've ever seen ;-)

small & mighty :)

Seriously, if we didn't do things because we were afraid of injury, we wouldn't do the things we love most. What kind of life is that???

Go for it, and kick some ass!

...dear lord. I just saw my first roller derby bits (it was a demo, not an actual game (bout? match? whatever it's called)) the other week in Las Vegas, they were having a huge weekend thing. And OMG, you CRAZY!

But, um, it did look like they were all crazy? So...uh...have fun, and don't die?

I do know you end up with bruises even if you are a large person (freakchelle's old roommate joined in Minneapolis a few years back and I remember when she came to visit and had huuuuuge bruises all over) so be prepared to explain to the doctors that no, you are not a victim of domestic violence!

Hahaha, I've had a concussion and tore some ligaments in my wrist playing ringette...bruises I can handle. Ringette is not really supposed to be a hard hitting sport. With derby I expect to get bruises and the occasional injury, it's a contact sport, I'd be silly to think nothing would happen.
Bout and match are both correct. I started watching it in Ohio and then caught a few bouts here. I was excited about rock climbing...and I still love it...but derby is awesome. I miss team sports, I even miss getting sent to the penalty box because I hit someone or knocked someone over.
My girlfriend comes home with bruises all the time from rugby, so we'll match? We can nurse each others wounds? She doesn't even have protective gear! Now THAT taks guts.
