Episode 5.01:
“SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL”
I can’t believe it! I know it has been one of the theories in fandom for how Dean would defeat Lucifer, but it’s awesome to actually hear it on the show. Dean is the archangel Michael’s chosen vessel! So cool…I almost feel guilty for wanting this to happen even though it’s against the basis of the show.
I know the show is supposed to be about the average human who does the best they can in extraordinary circumstances (fighting the supernatural). The whole being taken over by an angel is the antithesis of that - especially for Dean who has always been presented as the more average of the two while Sam had his psychic powers and everything. Dean, on the other hand, only had his training, passion and leadership skills…and all that combined made him rather exceptional, but no one really truly acknowledged that until the angels came along in season 4.
So, I’m of two minds regarding this. I’m ridiculously excited about the prospect of Dean being the “Michael sword”/his vessel, but then again, I’m glad (of course they have to do it this way) that they’re drawing it out…that Dean isn’t so gung-ho about giving his consent to be Michael’s vessel. That was hardcore how Dean refused despite what Zachariah did to “convince” him to be the vessel.
I’m looking forward to seeing how it all plays out as the season progresses…
Love that Castiel (best surprise ever!) saved Sam and Dean and was all awesome as I knew he’d be! So, based on what Castiel was insinuating (which threw me for a loop) was that the angels hadn’t taken Sam and Dean away from the danger of Lucifer (by placing them on an airplane), but it looks like God has returned (or maybe he just made it seem like he’d “left the building” in Zachariah’s words in the S4 finale) and got the brothers to safety.
…*is distracted* So excited to see Castiel again! He looked a little different - loved how he was more kickass and authoritative. He seems to be fitting into the role of renegade angel rather well though I’m shamelessly biased.
Too bad he kept silent about what really happened to him…after Chuck said he was blown to pieces - how in the world did Castiel come out of that unscathed? Maybe one of the Archangels or even God is on his side? Hmmm…all speculation now.
And that man, Nick, being “circled” by Lucifer as his chosen vessel. Very interesting, and effective in my opinion. I thought Lucifer’s argument was rather persuasive and I could understand how by the end of the episode, the man agreed to be Lucifer’s vessel. Your faith is tested rather harshly if you see your family senselessly murdered and you wonder why this was brought down upon you? Why would God do such a thing? It’s difficult for one’s faith not to be irreparably shattered after that…
I was expecting the fallout at the very end where Dean lays it out to Sam straight - trust has been lost. Period. That’s it. I understand Dean - after Sam chose Ruby over his own brother and then brought on the apocalypse (however unintentionally and misguided, it still happened), how could Dean not feel a chill wind and really rethink his relationship with Sam? It’s tough, real tough. Like Dean said, he had depended on Sam and then he was let down.
I wasn’t expecting Bobby being possessed by a demon, but so glad that it didn’t last. That shocked the hell out of me. So, I wonder if it’s really true and he’ll never walk again…
Meg is back! I thought this actress had a little bit of a lisp like she was trying to sound like the original!Meg, but it didn’t quite work out that way.
All in all, this premiere was a promising one and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season. :- )
