altruistic idea

this may be stupid, but it's an idea. it would be based on altruism and may or may not work, but here it goes.

in lieu of the recent events of the financial state of this country and the impact to worldwide economy, things look like they are going to get worse before they get better. unemployement will most likely rise as businesses try to cut expenses because they can't get loans to pay for their day-to-day operations.

so here it goes...

one-hour.org

the purpose of one-hour would be to get people to donate 1 hour of their salary, pre-tax, a week back into their companies, which would be registered with one-hour. this donation would be used to to pay employees who would have been otherwise laid-off. the government would have to offer some sort of tax incentive to participating companies in order to help alleviate the cost of carrying these employees' benefits and associated operating costs.

just think, how much money would you be losing out of your pocket if you donated 1 hour's wage before tax? maybe a few dollars, right? the government would ultimately still get the taxes from that money from the person who would still remain employed, so the only major loss would be the money lost from the tax incentives, but since it seems like that is the habit of the government already, would that really be a problem?

granted this isn't going to prevent unemployment, but it may help dampen the blow a little bit.

why should i give my hard-earned money to help someone i don't know? well, you're already giving the government a huge chunk of your money, pumping money into social security which you most-likely won't ever see by the time you reach retirement (that is if you ever are able to retire, since they keep upping the age), you're paying into medicare, and possibly will be paying to buy out some poor soul's sub-prime mortgage if mccain has his way. what's one hour at the end of it all?
