late night phone calls kill...

Mar 24, 2003 22:20

in early january, 2001, at 1:47am, the phone rang.
"your mom had a stroke. you have to get here fast."
an hour later -the drive felt like 10 hours- we stood in the emergency room.
we were approached by the hospital chaplain.
"the doctors have done all they can... she is resting comfortably."
i could not cry.
i thrashed my arms and let out a breath that was meant to be a scream.
they hid me in a small room and asked me about organ donation.

she was still alive

"her condition is quickly deteriorating..."

"she won't make it through the night..."

"may as well pull the plug..."

tonight, at 10:18pm, the phone rang.
a good family friend George died tonight.
he was a young man with a young wife.
he had cancer and fought it off for many years.
his wife anne is a beautiful, strong, wonderful woman and i hope that her strength prevails throughout this struggle.
please pray for them.
