Severus always hated this time of year. His official reason was that the students were inattentive in his class due to the annual Halloween Hogsmeade trip, usually resulting in many more accidents than usual, and the brief satisfaction of taking points from the culprits. He would never admit to anyone that he had to deal moreso with the personal heartache of watching the leaves changing colours and remembering Lily's delight over it. Back when they had still been friends, they would sit in the grounds together and watch the leaves flutter to the ground as they talked.
Severus was standing at one of the windows, watching the sun set, when Dumbledore came up behind him and rested his ruined hand on his shoulder. They were silent for a moment before Dumbledore said softly, "She would have forgiven you, Severus."
