I have finally joined the Dark Side of the geekdom force and went to a LARP this weekend. And you know what? I HAD AN AWESOME TIME!!. First and foremost the people were awesome - a pretty good mix of boys and girls, all the good kind of geek - creative, intelligent, non judgmental, and generally a lot of fun. There were 20 of us (14 pcs, 6 plot) on a beautiful wooded lot just outside of Stony Creek. The site is pretty new which made it rustic as far as camping experiences go, but beautiful none the less.
It was a lot of fun to stay in character and in game the whole weekend. Because game is effectively "on" the entire time you're there you listen *very intently* to what's going on around you at all times as at any moment day or night the inn, your camp, or on your way to the outhouse ogres, goblins, bandits, or whatever may attempt to waylay you. I loathed to take off my armor or let my axe and shied get more than a few feet away. At one point friday night we were sitting around the camp fire minding our own business when I heard that ominous thumping on the ground alarming me that something was running up behind me full tilt. I grabbed my axe, spun around on my back, and raised it just in time to block the blow of a dark elf ambushing our camp. I sang, fought, ate, and got a tonne of exercise.
Anyways if you've *ever* wondered what LARPing was like and like me have always avoided it for some reason or another I would highly recommend trying it out in July.
