I told my boss and good friend today that I was discouraged and needed a couple of mental health days as soon as possible. I really busted my hump this month to make things happen and unfortunately the nature of my business is that you don't know until much later whether or not you're just spinning your wheels or actually making money ( Read more... )

I've got nothing to add really beyond a third voice on the "take some fucking time for yourself front" and a second voice on the "look into the Man" front.

A little anecdote for you.

There's an organic bakery beside my appartment. New Moon, it's called.. It's run by a hippie chick who wants to be kind to the world and make good, healthy, tasty treats. She overworks and underpays her employees. She's been known to abuse government work programs to get inexpensive of free labour. Her working conditions are horrible to the point of illegality and she shamelessly abuses the idealism of the young, fresh out of school hippies that come to work for her because they want to be kind, simple bakers. This bitch is ALL about tha Benjamins.

On the other hand...

I work for the third most profitable multinational on the planet and the second most profitable lending institution in the world. They are the Big, Evil MAN from top to bottom, right? They make money hand over fist and the anual profits just keep going up. If you were looking to invest, you really couldn't go wrong with this company it's a money making machine, made out of money for the purposes of making more money and it makes lots. There must be some EVIL at the core here right? Sweatshop labour in third world countries? Unscrupulous hiring policies in underdeveloped nations? Blood diamonds? Support of some banana republic military junta?

Nope.

Fair, equitable hiring policies, diversity and inclusionism across the board. Internal support networks and worldwide a well treated and happy staff. These people are nice and they care.

Are they strict about when you work and what time you get in? Yeah. But structure's not inherently evil. In fact having structure sometimes really helps. You know you have to be there at 9, so there's no decision to make. Taking away my freedom to make bad decisions for myself has been one of the best decisions I've ever made.

The hippie baker doesn't have the resources to treat people well. She scrambles for every cent she makes and if she's going to build herself a better life, she needs every penny for herself.

While my boss wants to see the Bankdo well and certainly has a stake in how well it does, she's not going to starve if profits are lower this quarter.

The direct pressure's off and it makes it easier to be kind and generous when the money isn't coming out of your own pocket.

There are thousands of corporate sales jobs in canada man. Mostly with internal clients that already want what you're selling. This ain't your door to door sales and it ain't the big, bad man looking over your shoulder. It's an opportunity to take some weight off of your shoulders and settle into a routine that comes with benefits and a regular, reliable salary.

Yeah, what he said. The thing to watch out for is privately owned business' in which one guy is at the top. Even if he's flush and making scads of cash now, there was a time he wasn't. And therefore he still operates his business from that point of view. Keeps as much as he can gives little back to the employees and when he does give you something he wants to be recognised for being a great guy even though what he gave you was less than what any publicly traded company gives their staff.

Even outside sales, which has the freedom of allowing you to drive around on your own time, still has clients that expect to see you.

Take your time and do a little research. Look into the top 100 companies in Canada see if they appeal to you. Or just look at the job postings out there see what kind of sales job you want.

You have good sales skills and five years experience there is no reason you can't be bringing in 50K after bonuses plus car allowence by next year.
