BA (Hons) Creative Music Technology (J931) - Specialised Award

Year1

Whilst studying keyboard sound synthesis, sampling and audio/MIDI sequencing in Advanced MIDI Music Production, you will be exploring the creative applications of this technology in Composing For Broadcast Media. In this latter module you may find yourself writing music to a television titles sequence, incidental music cue or commercial and burning your solutions onto a compact disc (CD) portfolio. Similarly while studying digital mixing and modular digital multitracks in The Digital Recording Studio, you may be recording a film music cue of your own devising with live musicians synchronised to MIDI and picture in Introduction to Film and Video Scoring.

Years 2 and 3

Year 2 modules include Socic Art (in which you explore the wider concept of sound as an artistic medium) and the Digital Workstation (which focuses on Pro Tools TDM systems and Pro Control mixing). In Music and the Internet you'll design and build an audio website, whilst in Composing for New Media you'll be designing sound and music for games and VR environments. Other modules focus more specifically on your intellectual and professional development.

Year 3 modules (in software synthesis and processing) enable you to explore the sonic spectrum to a degree far beyond the limits of most mass-produced, commercial hardware. Sonograms from the IRCAM software AudioSculpt are used to give you graphic insights into the inner life of sound plus the ability to process, hybridise and morph sonic material. In Free Composition you combine the skills, techniques and knowledge acquired throughout the course in the realisation of an individually negotiated creative project.

The course, intended primarily for aspiring composers, is ear-led and values creative ability and achievement above traditional musicianship. It allows for the creative space necessary for genuine personal development and encourages you to develop your own, unique creative identity.
