On top of that Ruby, do you know what Stephen "200 IQ" Hawking's "greatest" achievement was according to the world? You should know since you made it one of the center pieces of your rant against Christians. HINT: A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME. According to all the biographies on the web, it's that book. This is a poor book. Stephen Hawking knows his stuff, but he is very bad at conveying that information to others. He doesn't go into enough detail to allow the user to understand the physics behind the subject and consequently the book has a very "so-there", "Because it just is!!" quality to it. For example, Early in the book he states that time moves slower close to the gravitational field of a large object, like the earth. He doesn't go into any detail, or explain this. I know that it it because gravity and acceleration are the same, and as einstien showed, going faster causes time to move slower. But if I wasn't familiar with relativity I wouldn't have understood this, and wouldn't have felt that I had learned anything.
I hit problems at chapter 6, "Black Holes" because I know very little about them, and thus didn't feel like could follow the chapter. The book has a reputation of being one in which people can't get past the first few chapters. Well I think this is why.
A better example of a good way to learn a subject is through the books of Richard Dawkins. Upon reading his books I always come away with an excellant understanding of the topic. It's a shame that this book wasn't in a similar style.

Hawking's story makes him a media favorite. The press (who know minimal physics if any) have for years given him the title "Greatest Physicist Since Einstein". He is an excellent physicist and a decent teacher but he is nowhere near being in the same league as Einstein, Newton or Maxwell. Paul Dirac and Richard Feynman are arguably the two most distinguished 20th Century physicists after Einstein. Ed Witten may be the most distinguished living physicist.
Richard Feynman (through his lectures transcribed on audiocassette/text formats and books) is perhaps physics's greatest teacher for the layperson and expert alike. Feynman had an unmatched knack for explaining high level physics in an original way. His "Lectures on Physics" is a classic and should be on the bookshelves of all physicists. Feynman's QED is the best non-mathematical description of quantum mechanics ever (QED stands for quantum electrodynamics, for which Feynman shared the Nobel Prize). His book, The Character of Physical Law, covers much of the same material as Brief History but is much clearer and more insightful. You won't have to unlearn anything from Feynman's books even if you decide to pursue a PhD in physics. I cannot say the same for Hawking's books. Read reviews on these and Feynman's other works. Also, Feynman lived an inspirational and incredibly rich life. For those who want to read about what many physicists view as the best candidate for a "theory of everything", read The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene. Hyperspace by Michio Kaku is another great book of the same vane. For those interested in a complete description of physical law, read the Road To Reality by Roger Penrose.

Hawking's book "A Brief History of Time" can rightly be termed a publishing phenomenon. But why? It is not particularly well-written, contains some poor English and doesn't answer questions it poses early on. As a popular science book, it compares unfavourably with those of Paul Davies and, as far as the subject matter is concerned, "The Primeval Universe" by Jayant Narlikar covers the material much more lucidly. So what is special about this book? For some reason, which is not identifiable immediately, Hawking has become almost a cult figure. This is surprising since he works in a highly abstract area of physics which is not readily understandable to the layperson, except, possibly, as science fiction. It is also true that Hawking has been portrayed as the greatest British scientist since Newton. But is this true? Unlike the theories of Newton, those of Hawking have not been verified as yet. However, criticism of these theories is, on occasion, stifled. A case in point is provided by the Bekenstein-Hawking expression for the entropy of a black hole. A major objection to this is that it violates the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Papers raising this have appeared in the scientific literature and none has been challenged. However, articles have been rejected for publication purely on the grounds that the end result disagreed with Hawking. This is puzzling but it may lead some to feel that Hawking has achieved a status in popular culture which has influenced his scientific standing. If this is so, it is certainly not his fault but it is not a healthy position for science. In the end, though, the fact remains that this book is a real publishing phenomenon but not one which is justified by its contents.

Engrossing, poetic, insightful, with nary a math equation to get in the way, the book is breathtaking in its scope yet highly readable. Full of anecdotes about famous thinkers through the centuries, it leads the reader on an adventure into the minds of brilliant and eccentric trendsetters in science, while vividly presenting the ideas that changed our understanding of the cosmos.The author, well-versed in the latest cosmological theories as well as the historical precedences leading to modern-day science as we know it, presents it all with such panache that both the layman AND the scientifically astute will come away enchanted. Highly recommended for astronomy buffs as well as anyone interested in the fundamental foundations of science.

When Timothy Ferris decided to write a history of Cosmology he very nearly ended up with a book the size of the Cosmos itself. But for the final product, the result of twelve years of work, he pared three volumes of material down to a more manageable 500 pages. At the same time such a person familiar with the meaning of Hawking's, Einstein etc... can use reflective perception to take Quantations' thoughts where they want to.
Once a reporter asked Einstein; if he "could sum up the theory of relativity in a paragraph or two". Einstein replied, "you would need to be a brilliant mathematician and then it would take at minimum a weekend to understand if you were really listening and working." Dr Stirt has introduced this subject to all to understand. You can enjoy several moments or days per page just thinking about his "quantations". Are the praises for this book really recognition of Hawking's accomplishments or that he achieved them despite his physical infirmities [Well what do you know someone observed the same thing that I did Ruby!] ? I approached this book years ago and was swiftly and completely lost. Years passed and I found a wonderful (if dated) primer, Knowledge and Wonder by Weisskopf. My success in understanding K&W (I get quantum physics now and can easily explain it to others) convinced me to reapproach `Brief History.'
The book remains for informed insiders; perhaps not the inner circle, but definitely `you gotta know it to get it.' Hawking consistently gives very short descriptions of theories that he then refers to throughout the text, but in ways that have little to do with the aspects he defined and in fact require more complete information. For example, I was frustrated trying to use his explanation of the theory of general relativity (p 30) in re: subsequent references. Luckily, in the years between my earlier attempt and this reading, the web has burgeoned and I was able to find a more complete and yet still brief but comprehensible explanation of this theory. And oh my goodness, Hawking now made sense. Obviously the connection is clear in Hawking's mind, but it never made the transition to words on the page.
Despite all, I *did* get it. But unfortunately, rather than finishing with a desire to learn more I am just tired and glad to be done with it. I feel like I subjected myself to a badly presented lecture series.
Hawking's writing is poor. Ideas ramble, tangential information occasionally takes over so the actual subject at had gets lost, recapitulation is erratic. Some of the self-references are conspicuously self-serving. True, for a scientist it's decent, but the book's writing should not be judged by a different standard than any other writing. That's what editors are for, and apparently this book's editor was so overawed by Hawking that he forgot to do his job.
This book should not be iconized. Nor should it be touted as accessible to the layperson. The information is interesting, but you have to want it and work for it. And when you're done, what you get may not have been worth the effort you put in. It was for me, but just barely. (end of review)

This is a poor book. Stephen Hawking knows his stuff, but he is very bad at conveying that information to others. He doesn't go into enough detail to allow the user to understand the physics behind the subject and consequently the book has a very "so-there", "Because it just is!!" quality to it. For example, Early in the book he states that time moves slower close to the gravitational field of a large object, like the earth. He doesn't go into any detail, or explain this. I know that it it because gravity and acceleration are the same, and as einstien showed, going faster causes time to move slower. But if I wasn't familiar with relativity I wouldn't have understood this, and wouldn't have felt that I had learned anything.
I hit problems at chapter 6, "Black Holes" because I know very little about them, and thus didn't feel like could follow the chapter. The book has a reputation of being one in which people can't get past the first few chapters. Well I think this is why.
A better example of a good way to learn a subject is through the books of Richard Dawkins. Upon reading his books I always come away with an excellant understanding of the topic. It's a shame that this book wasn't in a similar style.

Hawking's story makes him a media favorite. The press (who know minimal physics if any) have for years given him the title "Greatest Physicist Since Einstein". He is an excellent physicist and a decent teacher but he is nowhere near being in the same league as Einstein, Newton or Maxwell. Paul Dirac and Richard Feynman are arguably the two most distinguished 20th Century physicists after Einstein. Ed Witten may be the most distinguished living physicist.
Richard Feynman (through his lectures transcribed on audiocassette/text formats and books) is perhaps physics's greatest teacher for the layperson and expert alike. Feynman had an unmatched knack for explaining high level physics in an original way. His "Lectures on Physics" is a classic and should be on the bookshelves of all physicists. Feynman's QED is the best non-mathematical description of quantum mechanics ever (QED stands for quantum electrodynamics, for which Feynman shared the Nobel Prize). His book, The Character of Physical Law, covers much of the same material as Brief History but is much clearer and more insightful. You won't have to unlearn anything from Feynman's books even if you decide to pursue a PhD in physics. I cannot say the same for Hawking's books. Read reviews on these and Feynman's other works. Also, Feynman lived an inspirational and incredibly rich life. He had the brains of Einstein, the showmanship of a performer (which made him a great teacher) and just a great love and wonder for life in general. Read reviews on "Surely You're Joking, Mr Feynman" and "Genius: The Life and Science of Richard Feynman" for more details. You won't regret it.
For those who want to read about what many physicists view as the best candidate for a "theory of everything", read The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene. Hyperspace by Michio Kaku is another great book of the same vane. For those interested in a complete description of physical law, read the Road To Reality by Roger Penrose.

Hawking's book "A Brief History of Time" can rightly be termed a publishing phenomenon. But why? It is not particularly well-written, contains some poor English and doesn't answer questions it poses early on. As a popular science book, it compares unfavourably with those of Paul Davies and, as far as the subject matter is concerned, "The Primeval Universe" by Jayant Narlikar covers the material much more lucidly. So what is special about this book? For some reason, which is not identifiable immediately, Hawking has become almost a cult figure. This is surprising since he works in a highly abstract area of physics which is not readily understandable to the layperson, except, possibly, as science fiction. It is also true that Hawking has been portrayed as the greatest British scientist since Newton. But is this true? Unlike the theories of Newton, those of Hawking have not been verified as yet. However, criticism of these theories is, on occasion, stifled. A case in point is provided by the Bekenstein-Hawking expression for the entropy of a black hole. A major objection to this is that it violates the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Papers raising this have appeared in the scientific literature and none has been challenged. However, articles have been rejected for publication purely on the grounds that the end result disagreed with Hawking. This is puzzling but it may lead some to feel that Hawking has achieved a status in popular culture which has influenced his scientific standing. If this is so, it is certainly not his fault but it is not a healthy position for science. In the end, though, the fact remains that this book is a real publishing phenomenon but not one which is justified by its contents.

Full of anecdotes about famous thinkers through the centuries, it leads the reader on an adventure into the minds of brilliant and eccentric trendsetters in science, while vividly presenting the ideas that changed our understanding of the cosmos.The author, well-versed in the latest cosmological theories as well as the historical precedences leading to modern-day science as we know it, presents it all with such panache that both the layman AND the scientifically astute will come away enchanted. Highly recommended for astronomy buffs as well as anyone interested in the fundamental foundations of science.

But for the final product, the result of twelve years of work, he pared three volumes of material down to a more manageable 500 pages. Once a reporter asked Einstein; if he "could sum up the theory of relativity in a paragraph or two". Einstein replied, "you would need to be a brilliant mathematician and then it would take at minimum a weekend to understand if you were really listening and working." Dr Stirt has introduced this subject to all to understand. You can enjoy several moments or days per page just thinking about his "quantations". Are the praises for this book really recognition of Hawking's accomplishments or that he achieved them despite his physical infirmities [Well what do you know someone observed the same thing that I did Ruby!] ? I approached this book years ago and was swiftly and completely lost. Years passed and I found a wonderful (if dated) primer, Knowledge and Wonder by Weisskopf. My success in understanding K&W (I get quantum physics now and can easily explain it to others) convinced me to reapproach `Brief History.'
The book remains for informed insiders; perhaps not the inner circle, but definitely `you gotta know it to get it.' Hawking consistently gives very short descriptions of theories that he then refers to throughout the text, but in ways that have little to do with the aspects he defined and in fact require more complete information. For example, I was frustrated trying to use his explanation of the theory of general relativity (p 30) in re: subsequent references. Luckily, in the years between my earlier attempt and this reading, the web has burgeoned and I was able to find a more complete and yet still brief but comprehensible explanation of this theory. And oh my goodness, Hawking now made sense. Obviously the connection is clear in Hawking's mind, but it never made the transition to words on the page.
Despite all, I *did* get it. But unfortunately, rather than finishing with a desire to learn more I am just tired and glad to be done with it. I feel like I subjected myself to a badly presented lecture series.
Hawking's writing is poor. Ideas ramble, tangential information occasionally takes over so the actual subject at had gets lost, recapitulation is erratic. Some of the self-references are conspicuously self-serving. True, for a scientist it's decent, but the book's writing should not be judged by a different standard than any other writing. That's what editors are for, and apparently this book's editor was so overawed by Hawking that he forgot to do his job.
This book should not be iconized. Nor should it be touted as accessible to the layperson. The information is interesting, but you have to want it and work for it. And when you're done, what you get may not have been worth the effort you put in. It was for me, but just barely. (end of review)

Stop cluttering the web with information that has already been posted, which is far superior to yours. Listen to that idiot who said it's lazy to post so many sites, which is true in your case, since you rant when you write. And God has something to say about you quoting him, and your attempt to teach his word (yes, I'm going to quote the Bible! Oh, I guess that means I don't have "independent thought, that must mean that neither does anyone else who quotes something it says which agrees with their beliefs, like, "forgive" and "MAKE A RIGHT JUDGMENT":

For those of you who are wondering why I wrote this reply with the anger that I did when what the people said on the sites I pointed out weren't as bad as some other very bad sites (I can think of a few such sites), it was because of all the dumb comments combined, not just because of what they said by themselves, and because they supported each other's stupid comments, so it was a "group rant" you could say. Atheists are organized when it comes to this: being stupid and supporting each other's attacks against the religious (in general).
But God bless you evil ones, may he save you, I said a prayer for you, and will try to do so again. You need all the help you can get to survive among us mentally and spiritually fitter Christians.
