RPGs... in space!
Lately, I've been wondering about Xenosaga... it looks like a popular, though expensive series to pick up. I know very little about it, other than it has a lot to do with space and the main character is KOS-MOS and is some kind of machine.
There's an anime for it, and I tried to watch it, but it was boring (or I was tired). Since I have a tendency to enjoy video game animes, I can only assume it was because the setting wasn't what I was used to... (or that I was tired). Perhaps I need more background on the game itself.
The other spacey RPGs are Phantasy Star and Star Ocean. (There may be a couple others, but I can't think of them. I know a couple of series have the characters go into space or to the moon every once in a while - FFVIII, Grandia II, Skies of Arcadia, etc.)
But between the three main outerspace RPGs, Star Ocean is undoubtably my favorite. It has the perfect combination of fantasy elements and outerspace elements to make it absolutely enjoyable. Star Ocean 2 even got its own anime, cementing its place in my personal favorites.
It's because of this that makes me wonder why I don't like Xenosaga more...
Anyway, for Star Ocean, its the only series I like that would involve 'aliens' rather than just various 'races' of a fantasy world. The Expellians, the Tetragenes, the Nedians, and the aliens from SO1 and SO3, too. I love'em all. But only Star Ocean 2 has any sort of animation for it. So it gets narrowed down to those species.
Anyway, hands down, my absolute favorite Star Ocean character of all time is Ashton Anchors and he's going in my party regardless of any sort of considerations involving game mechanics or anything like that.
Luckily, Ashton's got a lot of interesting aspects to him, so I don't feel bad about including him.
SO2 characters with screen time:
Claude - Cool guy, neat firearms, boringly human
Rena - Nedian, blue hair, cute, healing powers, just boring in general
Dias - Expellian, swordsman, blue hair... boring though
Celine - Expellian, heraldry-mage, purple hair, entertaining! (I'd consider her!)
Ashton - Expellian, twin-swordsman, dragon-symbiote, barrel otaku (he wins!)
Opera - Tetragene, alien gunner, sexy blonde, interesting (I'd consider her, too..)
Ernest - similar to Opera (also considerable)
Precis - hate her, inventor, amusing enough, though...
Bowman - boring doctor
Leon - bratty Expellian catfolk, heraldry-mage, blue hair, sarcastic (reminds me of Genis from ToS, I'd consider him)
