HAI.
First off, before I wax poetically about this story, about how satisfying the beautiful angst-dipped tone and flavor of it is, you all need to know that I love the romance bits, too. Angst is empty without its opposite; you cannot have one with the other.
Make no mistake; this is a love story.
The most awesome Ru (
rurounihime), with her delicious talent for writing fic that emanates disquiet - because that is what it is, really:
Stormy, tense, restless and uneasy. All beautiful things.
Ru has indeed finished (started in 2005!) her wonderful Harry/Draco fic "Under Fingertips", which is a delicious and emotional read, now with a satisfying ending and epilogue, and if you haven't read it yet, why not?
Title :
Under Fingertips (link to Part 1 on LJ), or at
Skyehawke.
Author:
rurounihimeWord Count: Approx 22,000, 6 chapters + epilogue
Rating, Warnings: R, Mpreg*
Summary: It's been a month since he saw his lover, and Draco's had it with the disappearing act.
Beta, Author Notes, Disclaimers: See each chapter.
*MPREG: Disclaimer: For those of you who can’t go there, male pregnancy being anathema to your logic and/or good taste, I get that - I used to be the same as you. Trufax. But I absolutely recommend you try this anyways; I promise you that this Mpreg is not only plausible, it’s absolutely credible within the Harry Potter universe. You won’t find any Mary-Sue- self-insertion Renesmee-wtaffery here, folks: it’s all men, all slash, all the time, and no ass-babies. NO REALLY, I PROMISE.
In this story, you will find a Harry and Draco who are in an established SEXY relationship, though the author doesn’t take the easy way out, the beginning is very organic, you find you don’t care about the few months preceding, only the now. Her Harry and Draco appear to be challenging lovers, contestable, their contact has evidently been illicit and bawdy, likely hidden from family and friends. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, they reluctantly fall in love.
The romance here is not courtly, but it feels more real. These emotionally stunted men circling each other warily, neither giving any assurance that they are all in, or in at all.
***VAGUE SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT***
The author deftly and subtly impresses that her Harry doesn't feel he's worthy of anyone’s love - whether man or child, and though Draco knows the importance of both, he's only enjoying his freedom, understanding his heritage and their precarious position in a post-war world.
When Harry discovers his…predicament, as he is Muggle-raised (like us), he just isn’t sure what to do, or if it’s even real. Draco is always contrary, of course, being the wizard that he is - with generations of wizarding tradition and rumours and magic ingrained in his very soul, and can grasp what is happening, has happened, right away.
Trying not to spoil this story for you, I can tell you there are some intense emotional ups and downs to take us to the end game, and finally, our recently posted epilogue.
The epilogue is bittersweet with an emphasis on sweet; like a special after-meal coffee. Short but fulfilling, hinting at the future and closing the past, and I'm glad because the overall tension of this universe, the uncertainty and cliffhangers of every chapter had me on edge constantly. It still does upon re-read, even though I know the story well, and that's the gift this author has, what she had shared with us.
And I fucking absolutely loved every minute of it.
If you loved it as much as I did, you will feel that there is easily another 4 times 22,000 that could be - should be - written in this universe, to make it last forever. But it’s not necessary.
As well, as our lovely author states: love for the source canon and the work for this pairing has been lost. But she promised to deliver - and in fact, has - an ending to satisfy.
As for the many more words, Ru did have plans during these last 7 years for this story to continue on and thankfully she has given all her story notes after the epilogue for the reader to chew on as a dessert chaser. I personally love it when writers do that, I find it gives the reader more of a closure and can influence re-reads of the story, maybe even make it more potent, know the endgame the author had in mind, but was unable to deliver in its entirety.
That said, this is not a WiP. It is a closed story; it just that won't evolve in to the epic breadth that the author had intended for it from the beginning. She originally wrote it for
coffeejunkii and later finished it for ME!!
But I thank her for all she gave and I look forward to reading it again and again.
Thank you, RU! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
(Now if I can only get her to write Hawaii Five-0, Sons of Anarchy, or Stargate: Atlantis!)
Cheers,
DJ
