Use your ATM card to get cash, and spend that as much as possible. It's way less confusing, you get a better exchange rate, and there's less chance of overdrawing your account. I wouldn't even bother with traveller's cheques anymore. They're becoming obsolete. Hardly anywhere takes them anymore, and you HAVE to have your passport with you to use them. Which is a pain in the ass. Because if you're just, say, travelling for a weekend within the country you're staying in, and you don't have your passport with you, it's a big fat pain in the ass. Like having cigarettes and not having a lighter. Also, I'm sure everyone's told you to pack fewer clothes and stuff than you think you'll need. Don't walk around in the snow in suede shoes with no socks (the most horrendous stink you can imagine results from this: found that one out the hard way). Have fun. Talk to interesting strangers. Get lost a couple of times. And don't buy drugs. People will usually just give them to you.
But most of all, again, have fun, and be safe. <3 you, Bethany
