Going home is like leaving civilization

Hiya! I'm headed home (essentially) later today to visit my family for a week and a half or so. I'll be pretty busy today with errands before I go. I do enjoy visiting my family but it's a bit like being cut off from the rest of civilization. Luckily these days they do have wireless internet, I have a cellphone, and we do get a (crappy) newspaper, but the feeling still persists. It will probably be a good way to really relax and kick off all this residual stress. It still doesn't feel like I'm done yet.

Went home this weekend for a graduation party. Lots and lots of extended family there; about 2/3 of my family showed up, so there were about 40 people at the peak. We played lots of volleyball as well as quite a few other games. It was a little overwhelming but fun. I had to go through the whole speech how many times about where I was goign to work and where I was going to live, etc. *rolls eyes* For some reason I really wasn't expecting graduation gifts, but of course I got them. Luckily, it was mostly money or small token gifts...but now I have to write like 16 thank you cards. I really appreciate the gifts but given that soon I'll have a fancy job with a nice income (especially in comparison to my grad student salary :) ), it feels odd to accept gifts especially of money. I don't want to rank gifts, but the most appropriate gift was a history of math book which looks really good. I'm taking it home with me for some relaxing reading.

I've been so tired from the weekend especially yesterday (my family can be oddly, particularly active when we get together). We saw Jesus Christ Superstar last night. Good movie, very interesting. It was a little weird, but I think it was done really well and the music is good. I had heard the music some before, but I'm not sure if I've seen the movie itself before. But I was so tired, my conversation for the evening was on the level of point out what I was looking at. Look, there are shoes, let's talk about shoes. I'm sure I came across as criticizing the house or its cleanliness.

Anyhoo, gonna help my sister and probably my brother move apartments this week. Then next week will actually be relaxing - that's the plan at least. My dad may or may not be off next week depending whether or not his union goes on strike. I did let my sister know that I'll be using her apt complex's hot tub while I'm there. That's my fee (or honorarium) for helping her move. :)
