That's somewhat more vehement a reaction than I was expecting, but from their casting and advertising, it was pretty clear that they were trolling the audience.
They were setting up people's expectations about the character to maxmize the effect when they yanked the rug out from under them. If they'd used an actor who was about as well-known as the rest of the cast, and the ads had been more ensemble-based, it wouldn't have been as shocking.
