Copied from Merle's website:
Are you people ready for this?... Merle and the Strangers will be opening for The Rolling Stones on November 29th in Dallas, Texas at the American Airlines Arena...Is that amazing or what?!!!
Merle will be performing a 45 minute set similar to the Bob Dylan tour...what a great way to close out one hell of a great year...but stay tuned things are only gonna get even bigger and better I promise!!! There are some great things in the works for the upcoming year...so keep checking back to this site for the only place to get official Merle Haggard and the Strangers news.
I LOVE THIS MAN. When he came to town, they did the quarter-stage thing at Hulman Center, which in itself is a crying shame....and there were only a few hundred people there, which is a CRIME.
He sounds as good, if not better, than he ever did.
But the memorable part for this somewhat jaded air personality was how he treated me. I actually had the opportunity to spend a couple of hours with this legendary singer and it was just about the coolest thing I've ever done.
This was within a year of the Iraq war. WMD was the big topic. This man said, and I quote: "If they don't find some soon, they better be BURYING some somewhere." First time anyone had been that outspoken to me personally.
Anyway, we also spent some time talking about being a living legend nobody wants to see. I just don't get it. But talk about a magnetic personality! I just love this man.
And for once I remembered to ask for a liner: "Hi folks, this is Merle Haggard and DIANE is my favorite DJ." hehe, I forgot to ask him to do our call letters. ooops!
Just one more Merle tidbit: I have his home phone number. :-D He's probably changed it by now, but given how different his life is today, I'm betting not.
I'm just happy he's opening for the Stones and will be heard by more than a few hundred people for a change. ;-)
