Well, I would have done one last night, but I was tired and my head hurt and I was burning from too much sun, so I'll post now.
We missed Every Time I Die, were stuck in the line to get in, so our first band of the day was Lacuna Coil.
Lacuna Coil: Pretty nice, I think it was too early to really enjoy them, or maybe they were off. I would go see them again at a cheaper show to get a chance to really hear them, I love Cristina's voice...
Bleeding Through: Not bad at all. I wasnt a HUGE fan of their stuff, but I knew 2 of the songs and got to sing along, which was fun and mildly surprising because I hadnt realized I knew them.
Atreyu: FUCKING AMAZING. I am SOOOOOOOOOOO glad I finally got to see them live! Every song was awesome, I had an awesome time watching the "hardcore kiddie" pit, which had some amazing dancers in it. Great set, and I have to say, their lead guitarist was one of the best at the show, that kid has some talent.
Darkest Hour: Not bad, I thought they were kinda dull, but I would give them a second chance, it was still kinda early.
Throwdown: Another amazing set. I really enjoyed them also. They played Forever, which I love, have been listening to on my Trustkill compilation for months.
Magna Fi: We bailed out of the pit for them, went to check out some of the Village of the Damned, get some water, etc. We could hear them though. And I wish I couldnt, they sounded horrible.
Devildriver: Still out of the pit for the first half, was in it for the second half while working our way up for the next act, which is why we were mainly there. They were.... ehhhh... Dez or whatever his name is should have stuck with Coal Chamber, because Devildriver was pretty horrible.
Otep: FUCKING AMAZING. The whole crowd (or atleast everyone up front) was chanting their name way before they came on. You could tell Otep was really feeding off of it too, she kept popping up over the amps in the back smiling, you could just tell she was pumped. The set was decent, just too short: 4 songs. They opened with "Blood Pig", then played Hooks & Splinters, then My Confession. They closed with Warhead, which was awesome, me and Pie were screaming the words along, I dont think many people knew it since it is still new, but we sure as hell did.
God Forbid: Listened to them while in line to see Otep. Not bad.
Unearth: Listened to them while in line to see Otep. I am mad I missed them, they sounded amazing. But I got to meet all of Otep again, got another poster, autographed. Got to meet a cute girl in line waiting. Was worth it.
Lamb of God: Missed it. :-\ We were chilling in the shade, Justing crashed out for a bit, we were starting to get tired, we got our ass kicked during some of the Push-Pits.
Hatebreed: Missed it, thank god. See above. Unfortunately we still caught 2 songs, standing behind some white trash piece of shit screaming along with the band. I wish I could be cool like that.
Slipknot: Me and Pie went into the pit for this, I just had to see them. I am not a huge fan or anything, but you cant deny that they put on a good stage show. I had an awesome time watching them do their thing... watching clown beat his drums with a bat, watching him and the other drummer duel with snare drums, watching the DJ ride the drums... I mean, it was an awesome shows. And I could listen to them, live any day, I love the drumming in their music. They played mostly older stuff, I think they only played 2 new songs: Duality, which I knew the words to somehow, and some other song.
Black Label Society: Skipped in the interest of chilling. Justin was wiped out, everyone else was getting there.
Superjoint Ritual: See above. These bands just werent good enough to warrant the energy it took to climb the hill to hear them (we had lawn seats, so seeing was out of the question).
Dimmu Borgir: I just HAD to hear them live. They were awesome. I was headbanging the whole goddamned time.
Then we left. We missed Slayer, Judas Priest and Black Sabbath... I was upset about Slayer, but we were all about to fall asleep, we were tired as shit. It was probably a wise decision.
To sum up Ozzfest 2004 for those of you with a date in your area soon: (This includes Richmond people, there is a show in Raleigh at the end of August, I may go to that one as well, it's no further than this one was)
Pros:
OTEP
Slipknot
Atreyu
Throwdown
Dimmu
Slayer
Cons:
Magna Fi
Devildriver
Hatebreed
$4 water
$10 Personal Pizzas
FYE bugging you every 5 seconds about their autograph tent
And if you are not into Hardcore, then you may be better off catching an Offfest date with the metal bands, because there is a lot of 'core this year, which I enjoyed for the most part.
All in all I saw/heard 13/20 bands, enjoyed 10 of them, and definitely felt like it was worth my... $80-90 I spent for gas/food/water/ticket/whatever.
Oh yeah, and I got an awesome Otep poster signed, their DVD, and a pre-order of their new CD, which is out in 8 days!
