especially those in my thursday game...

i would LOVE it if everyone read at least one William Gibson book, but i doubt that's gonna happen... quick list of stuff that i think is worth checking out (and have access to):

Idoru by william gibson
mona lisa overdrive by william gibson (there's actually 2 copies of this - levall has one and so do i)
all tomorrow's parties by william gibson (the sequel to Idoru -- read that one first)
1984 by George Orwell -- mainly for the oppressive corp-state feel. it's cyberpunk without the cyber. or really the punk, for that matter.

i just finished lion's game by nelson demille (thanks, ariellenamara!) and while it isn't cyberpunk per se, it's got a really good government-agencies-watching-everything-we-do sort of feel to it, and the stuff with Asad and his mission is scary enough that i might steal the idea (or parts of it).
ari: imagine Asad if he'd had cybernetic enhancements AND a Jihad. scary, ne?

lessee... what else... oh! i've got a couple of sci-fi short-story collections, but a good number of them are space-oriented. the ones that aren't so off-Earth are good jumping points, though. ask me if you're interested and i'll try to dig up the cyberpunky stuff from the piles upon piles.

and damn Gibson anyhow... i made the recommended reading suggestion last week and the netrunner's currently reading mona lisa overdrive so i decide "hey, might as well do some of this reading i'm pushing on my players" and now i'm re-re-reading Idoru -- in about a day and a half, it should be ready for the next person to read.

also, if you have or can get a hold of:
Neuromancer, Virtual Light and Burning Chrome, all by Gibson
Snowcrash by neal stephenson
the movie New Rose Hotel starring Christopher Walken and Willem Dafoe is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, although it's a bit convoluted at times if you're not paying attention.
however, it's based on a story by william gibson (who else?) and is a really good visual representation of the cyberpunk style and world. there's even a cybereye sequence or two.

(on the topic of movies, i could toss out the 'quintessential' cyberpunk films: bladerunner, until the end of the world, johnny mnemonic, etc... but the mood i think i'm going for is more the sting / criminal / pulp fiction / sort of thing.)

cyberpunk, media, gibson, gaming
