Summary: Lacey takes comfort in meeting strangers at the Rabbit Hole, especially a man named Joshua...

She didn’t know who she was. And he didn’t seem to know who she was either, it was oddly comforting. In a small town where most people knew her, finding a stranger was wonderful. It was damn near magic (which wasn’t real as everyone preached to her) since with him, he didn’t try to tell her who she was. In fact he was happy to know her now, not who she had been.

He was charming, that was sure. He said his name is either Joshua Callahan or Adam, depending on what she wanted to call him. He said he was also either a music teacher at the elementary school or he was an exiled prince. She found herself laughing at his words. His face split into a grin, it was so pure that it took her breath away. There was no ulterior motive, there was nothing but friendliness radiating from the man. For a few minutes she could believe he was a prince, a very charming one. Someone it was easy to have a crush on.

She wanted to call him Joshua, and he was fine with that. When she gave her name, she gave the one she knew, not the ones the others insisted she was. She was not Belle, she was Lacey. She liked to drink, liked to hustle people at pool, she liked to live in the moment. Joshua, on the other hand, was more calm and relaxed. In some moments, she caught the most unbelievable sadness lurking in his features but it would always vanish when he looked at her.

He denied his depression until he was four drinks in and it was only on her insistence. He confessed it was due to loneliness, it didn’t matter what life he was in, and he was alone. She didn’t understand that remark and blew it off to the very strong drinks he had consumed but she understood his loneliness.

Though a man named Mr. Gold was insisting that he loved her, insisting she was his, she didn’t feel it. She realized as he lay, supposedly dying (given he was fine now), that he was forcing his opinion upon her as he had forced himself on her as she lay sleeping. She was nothing but someone to manipulate and someone to control. Someone who would tell him he was good though he wasn’t and he made that very clear. She was no longer going to be someone’s enabler; she wasn’t going to be a conscience either (especially since she was ignoring hers).

Something within her felt a sigh of relief each time she met with Joshua at the bar. They would play a few games of pool, which she would win each time then retire to a secluded corner where they talked until last call. The subjects always varied and day by day, she felt more assured of herself and who she was.

Her name was Lacey.

His name was Joshua.

She was drifting through her life, slowly picking up the pieces after her accident.

He was trying to find a way to stay grounded, to stay sane in this small town.

As his hand brushed hers as he stood, he said good bye. His usual smile had faded quicker than usual and he had turned away when she called to him.

“Joshua?”

“Yes, Lacey?”

“See you tomorrow?”

Though all the happiness was drained out of his features, he seemed to smile in spite of himself as he looked into her eyes. “Of course.”

She smiled gently, hoping to see even a bit of light return to his eyes. “Good night, sweet Prince.” There was a spark in his eyes as he turned away and she felt herself falling even harder.
